Update 1-17-16: The family was able to get a headstone and place it so I am changing the amount requested to cover the remainder of the cost of the funeral.
My mother was diagnosed with lung cancer in 2010. She had surgery to remove part of her right lung, and she underwent chemotherapy and radiation treatments as well. After all of this, she moved in with me and my family in Michigan. In late August of 2014, she went to the doctor with a persistent headache. The doctor recommended an MRI since mom was a cancer patient. I did not know that cancer can metastasize (spread) via the lymph system, but the doctor did. She had an MRI on September 2nd. They found 5 masses in her brain. She began radiation treatment on Sept. 4th. Her health quickly deteriorated to the point that she had to be admitted to the hospital as she was not capable of walking anymore and taking care of herself without assistance. She passed away October 2nd at about 2:00 a.m. with her brother and sister present. She wanted to be buried in Georgia in the family plot with her father, mother, brother and an infant sibling. I arranged transport via a funeral home here in Michigan to the funeral home in Georgia that would take care of everything else. Both of them were wonderful in offering discounts to keep the costs down. Our church also chipped in from the benevolent fund to help us as well. We had no life insurance for her since she was a cancer patient. I have $3,500.00 left on the funeral expenses. I am trying to raise $5,000.00 so I can pay that off and also get a headstone for her gravesite.
