Hi my name is Rita. I am a single mom to two amazing boys. They are my heroes. The reason I am asking for your help is I am in desperate need of a wheelchair accessible van.
My oldest son is Gavin, he is 13 years old. He was diagnosed with Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy when he was 18 months old. A few months after his 11th Birthday he lost his ability to walk and is now using a wheelchair. For those of you who don't know what Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy is, it is a genetic disease that children are born with and gradually lose the strength in their muscles. My other son is Hezekiah and he is 3 years old, he also has Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy and was diagnosed in utero. He is walking but when he gets around Gavin's age he will also need a wheelchair. The reason I am doing this fundraiser is I need to purchase a wheelchair accessible van as I am having to lift Gavin into our current vehicle that is not accessible, he is growing into a young man right before my eyes and lifting him is getting difficult for me. We also are not able to take his motorized wheelchair in our current vehicle because our car is not equipped. If we had a wheelchair accessible van he would be able to bring his chair and be more independent and wouldn't have to depend on me to wheel him around with one hand while I push his younger brother in stroller in other hand and/ or chase him down. Before long Hezekiah will be using a wheelchair also so i need a van that's going to last me a very long time. Unfortunately I don't have the money for a down payment and that is why I am asking for your help. I would have to trade in my current vehicle as I still owe on it so that kind of brings me into the negative and a down payment is needed so that I can be able to afford the monthly payment. Please find in your hearts to help us out. Any amount would help us to be able to get this accomplished!
