On December 21, 2016 my brother, Anthony, was told that multiple tumors were found throughout his body including on his spine. He had to be taken for emergency surgery to relieve the pressure from his spine in an effort to prevent further damage.
Surgery lasted about 6 hours and when it was over the surgeon told us the cancer (lymphoma) was aggressive and widespread. Anthony had rods and screws placed in his neck and on his spine. He remained in intensive care and on a ventilator for longer than we wanted. Chemotherapy began before he even woke up. Eventually he became well enough to be moved out of intensive care where he continued with a regimen of 5 day chemotherapy treatments approximately every 3 weeks. In between treatments, Anthony worked with physical therapists to gain strength and learn how to walk again. The month of March consisted of preparing him for a stem cell transplant that took place in early April. The transplant process has gone well so far and on May 12th, Anthony was discharged from the hospital for the first time since he was admitted on December 21st!The funds raised will assist Anthony and his family with the medical expenses from his 5 month long hospital stay and the medical treatment he has received and will continue to receive. Current treatment includes numerous medications, physical therapy 3 times per week to continue to learn how to walk and build strength and outpatient hospital visits for close monitoring as he progresses with the stem cell transplant.
Anthony’s life changed on December 21st and it will never be the same. I will never forget standing in the hallway that night and listening to the surgeon talk with my brother. Anthony is a 40 year old young man who had never experienced health concerns in the past. He is a provider for his wife and 15 year old daughter who is a cancer survivor herself. We are so proud of Anthony and the fight that he has put forth. We are proud of his wife and family for their courage and strength throughout this extremely difficult time.
Even in this circumstance, Anthony has managed to keep the hospital staff and his family smiling and laughing. On behalf of Anthony and his family, thank you for taking the time to read his story. Please share his story and keep him in your prayers as he continues to fight. God bless you!
