Jay's Medical Bills

Donation protected
Hello! Most of you likely already know that late last month, my dad had a near death experience and considerable hospital stay for a combination of severe heart and kidney problems.  What follows is a slightly more detailed account.

In early May of this year, Jay had already been in slowly declining health, and his symptoms began getting much worse.  He was uninsured and waiting to see a doctor until July 1st when he would be eligible for Medicare.  My mother Hilary became concerned about some rapidly worsening symptoms, put her foot down, and took him to the ER on May 19th. Her instincts weren't off, as the doctors told us that he was in the late stages of both heart and kidney failure.  They told us that he wouldn't have made it more than a couple days without immediate medical treatment.  They asked us if he had a will, and if we wanted to see a chaplain.

Fortunately, after five days in the ICU and another nine in the cardiac wing at University of Washington Medical Center, he walked out of the hospital on his own two feet.  After responding well to all treatments extremely quickly, all follow up with doctors show that his health's trajectory is even more positive than expected. He has some new prescriptions to manage, and will have to make lifestyle changes moving forward, but he is back home and in good spirits.

The teams of nurses, doctors, specialists, and assorted other medical staff at UWMC saved my dad's life, and our family cannot put into words how grateful we are for them and their dedication and care. We don't know how to ever repay them, but the folks at the UWMC billing department have a pretty good idea--  apparently $115,000 should do the trick.  As you may have noted earlier, my father was (and still is, until 7/1) uninsured and my family owes this money in full.

To be honest, our family is far, far away from having the means to pay a debt like this and we need your help.  We really appreciate everyone who has already offered help, and we want to reach out to anybody else who can spare anything.  Even $5 makes a difference, and I've set the initial goal of this campaign at an ambitious $50,000 that we have no expectation of actually reaching.  It won't cover the whole bill, but your generosity will give my family some time and financial breathing room.

My mother and I spent every day for two weeks straight in the hospital with Jay as he fought for his life back, and the emotional support already provided by so many of you means so much to us.  It is uncomfortable to now have to ask for more support in the form of money, and we wouldn't if we didn't absolutely have to. Again, anything helps.  Please consider donating if you can. We humbly thank each and every one of you so much for everything.
