RIP Mykey Spice

Donation protected
Michael Manning a.k.a. Mykey Spice was diagnosed with congestive heart failure in 2015. In October of last year he had his first of five massive heart attacks, was resuscitated twice, and spent close to four months in the hospital, mostly in ICU. Mykey’s heart could not keep up. Mykey’s liver and kidneys were shutting down, causing him to retain water and be swollen all over. The doctors sent him home saying, “There's nothing more we can do for you, we must shift our focus from quantity of life to quality of life.” Yet, he remained in unbearable pain, unable to sleep, and unable to breathe for another three weeks. We made him as comfortable as we could, at home, but it was hard watching him go through it.

Mykey passed away at home, in Palisades, on February 13th, 2019.  He was 33 years old.  His Mom, Dad and Brother were there by his side.

Mykey did not qualify to be on the list for a heart transplant. He did not qualify to be on a list to obtain a mechanical heart. He could not get on a plane and fly to where he could get current cardiac medical attention. He could not afford the one million dollars it cost to grow a new heart from his own DNA and tissue. No one mentioned that these were even options because he was an addict. He was not a “user” the entire time he was in the hospital but that didn’t deter the staff from treating him like he was still using. I began researching the heart transplant process when Mykey had his first heart attack and was in ICU. It is eye opening. Mykey, as all of you know, was a free spirit. He lived his life like a tree hugging hippy. He loved all of you deeply and wasn’t afraid to hug you and tell you that. The hospital staff had to get used to it.

Mykey has touched so many hearts and lives. His sense of humor and his positive attitude touched me deeply. Quoted from a friend, “I couldn't ever depend on him to be prompt and on time but I could always depend on him to be there at the right time.” He was a good soul, a great friend, and will be sorely missed.

We need some help with some of his bills…You can help by donating funds that will go toward bills he incurred while he was alive, for alternative treatment/care (vitamins, supplements, whole foods), his day to day living expenses, rent and now his funeral expenses.

If he has touched your life, we would love to hear the story.  Tell us how you met, or of a memory of him that makes you smile. Please share in the comments and please give what you can. No amount is too small. Thank you all for your love and prayers.
