Days for Girls - Empowering Women

Donation protected
On 14th July 2018, Mark Blackburn from One Brown Planet  will be challenging himself on the worlds most difficult road race, the Taiwan King of the Mountain (KOM) Challenge.

Together with Vanessa Lawless, their goal is to complete the challenge and raise awareness for the charity, Days for Girls. In the process, we aim to raise USD 5500 to support this amazing organisation.

The Charity – Days for Girls

Have you ever had to decide between buying essential sanitary products or feeding your children?

Every month, this was the decision Dianne faced when she had her period. Every month her boys knew that food would be limited because she had to purchase pads. If she didn’t, then she couldn't go to work to make enough money to feed her family.

It’s a decision millions of girls like Dianne have to make every month. But it shouldn’t have to be like this. No-one should have to choose between their health or food.

Days for Girls  is a global foundation which works with vulnerable women and girls from over 110 countries, providing health services and education. Through this incredible charity over 1,000,000 women and girls around the world — have been given back their dignity, health, and opportunity through menstrual health solutions and education.

And it was thanks to Days for Girls, that Dianne was finally given a way out of the vicious cycle she was trapped in for so long.

Vanessa Lawless has been working for several years with charities in Thailand, doing some incredible projects, including work with Days for Girls – But they need more money to help more women such as Dianne.

That's why in 2018 we are going to try and raise USD 5500, which is enough to buy almost 400 kits for the girls in Thailand.

That is 400 young women and girls that no longer have to decide whether to feed their kids or buy sanitary products. Let's give them back some dignity and empower these young women to help themselves make a better life.

The Challenge

The Taiwan King of the Mountain (KOM) Challenge is billed as the worlds toughest bicycle climb!

But just how tough can a bike race really be?

The race starts at 6 am, leaving from Hualien on the East coast of Taiwan and continues along 105 km’s of the most agonising hill climbing in the world. From the start at sea level, the race winds up through more than 6,000m (19,685ft) of Taiwan’s stunning mountainous scenery, finishing at the dizzying height of 3275m (10,724ft).

Energy sapping low oxygen levels, a brutal Taiwanese summer heat and continuous climbing for up to 9 hours, this truly is the worlds toughest challenges.

Mark Blackburn is challenging himself to not only climb this mountain but also to help raise awareness for Days for Girls and raise more than $5000. Please support him and the incredible charity, Days for Girls, by donating as much as you can.

Suggested Funding - Pay for his suffering!

The "At Least He Turned Up Award" - Suggested Donation $10

- Mark manages to make it to the race in his shinest lycra but is overcome with emotion and the dawning realisation that he is in no condition to finish the race. He slinks off to the side somewhere hoping no-one will notice.

The "Try Harder" - Suggested Donation $25

- Off to a great start but fails miserably at the 1000m (3200ft) mark. Thanks for the effort!

The "Half Way Hero" - Suggestion Donation $50

- Mark fights his way to the 2000m (6561ft) mark, over halfway to the summit and then.... nothing. Sitting in a pile of sweaty lycra, this is where he will stay.

Almost there... - Suggested Donation $75

- 3000m (9842ft) - 90% of the way to the top, the air is thin and more than 10,000 calories burnt so. But the final ascent is just out of reach. This seems to be the end of the road.

The Summit - Suggested Donation $100

- He started at sea level over 105km ago, but finally, Mark has sweated and cursed his way to the summit of the Wuling Mountain. Standing at 3275m (10,724ft) this is the highest navigable pass in Taiwan and rated as one of the most difficult bike climbs in the world. He is exhausted but thankful for your support (but looking forward to a hot bath and massage).

No matter how much Mark suffers in this challenge, it really pails into insignificance the suffering that these young women and girls have to endure month after month. Let's give them a chance for a better life and support this fantastic cause.

We have worked hard on this project to help these girls who so desperately need our help.  Which is why we are asking you all to dig deep and help as much as you can!

Lots of love and thanks,

Mark and Vanessa!!
