The Punkin Project, "Chapter 2"

When Wylie brought me to my first Youtopia  in 2014, he told me he wanted to build an art car for the La Jolla Indian Reservation. He was motivated by a sincere desire to help members of the community get around the event, and since most art cars are built for desert lake beds, they get stuck on the mountainous terrain that hosts San Diego’s regional Burning Man  event.

We brainstormed from the ground up, with Wylie bringing his off-road, and race team experience to bear and came up with a 4WD steampunk pumpkin carriage, The Punkin. I imagined a comfy “I Dream of Jeannie” interior in fall colors.

The Punkin Project started in 2017 with the Punkin Lounge, a stationary lounge in the shape of a pumpkin. It took about $2,000 in materials of which we were granted $1,200 by SD Collaborative Arts  .

Chapter 2 has the Punkin being towed by our vintage Massey Harris ’47 Mustang. This year’s material cost is estimated at $3400. We were granted $1800 by SDCoLab and hosted a fundraising event to raise money for the purchase of the tractor, leaving us with a gap of $1600 for materials.

As for me, I’ve wanted to bring an art car into the world since attending my first Burning Man in 2011. I’m stoked to be part of the Punkin Project and the way it represents the landscape of my new hometown, San Diego.

Help us realize this stage of our build with your donation. We are grateful and working on schwag to share with our donors.

By the way, we do have a 3 year plan, so this is not the end. In fact, we anticipate the 3rd phase of our build (that will see the Punkin self powered) to exceed $5,000 in materials and we’ll keep you posted!
