If I were to tell you that you had to run a 50-mile race TOMORROW without any prior training, you'd have a better chance of conquering that if your life depended on it then receiving a pancreatic cancer diagnosis...
With ONLY a 9% 5-year survival rate, pancreatic cancer is one of the most devastating diagnoses. Unfortunately, unless it's caught early most never make it anywhere near 5 years, as the aggressive nature of this cancer takes hold quickly. 56,770 people will be diagnosed with it this year, according to the American Cancer Society, and they will face the same brutal uphill climb that my uncle Joe did...
Running the 50-mile Ocean's 50 race on November 9th is in honor of my uncle Joe, who throughout his life always put himself last and friends, family, and strangers first, no matter the cost. His strength and vigor for life were unrivaled, with an unforgettable larger than life personality. It's who I will be thinking about during those 50 miles in the hot Florida sun, where everything from cramps to heat exhaustion to torn up feet will be tempting my body to quit. Still, that challenge is nothing compared to the life or death battle that he faced and 56,770 other families will come face to face with this year. Let's do our part to even up this battle! Every dollar counts, for this under-researched and underfunded disease, and might just be the difference for another family out there! 100% of the funds will go directly to the Lustgarten Foundation, a 501 non-profit organization dedicated to pancreatic cancer research. Thanks to separate funding to support administrative expenses at the foundation, 100 percent of every donation goes directly to research!
