I would not have expected my own reaction to Maria. Not that I would not expect to feel the pain, and worry, and loss… but I wept. I bled. It was hard to even speak without trembling when asked, “So… is your house ok”? I quickly realized my house was the least of my concern…
Being in Arizona as I watched the place that I grew to love, and call home, be reduced to ruin in a matter of hours, shook me. An overwhelming sense of helplessness took hold. I wanted to be there. I wanted to help… but all I could do was watch.
Six days after the storm, I read about an orphanage that had been surrounded by water, like a mote, and they had only a couple days rations left and without a generator… I prayed someone would help them. As I drove my kids to school, within 10 minutes an American Airlines employee had offered to use his free shipping benefit to friends or family in PR (one generator and 150 lbs of goods) if someone could pick it up. I couldn’t believe I was given this chance. That tomorrow Chris could pick up a generator and much needed supplies and take them straight to Mis Primero Hogar! It started a snowball effect and I began enlisting anyone from American Airlines that could help me get these supplies over. In that week I was able to get 13 generators and almost 1,000 lbs directly into the hands of people in need.
This project evolved into an “aftermath” project. My hope is to take on one project at a time and through volunteers and donated funds, little by little make a difference.
