By Christen K. Chargualaf - Casey's Sister

On Monday, September 9, 2019,
our Casey Joseph Chargualaf took his own life. He was 29 years old.

Casey comes from a big family and he was the baby of all of his siblings, our parents' youngest child.

Our family is terribly grief-stricken & our lives will never be the same.

In addition to the indescribable pain that we are all in right now, we also have to deal with and live, knowing that if Casey was properly evaluated & assisted & the suicide watch protocol was executed in a timely manner, this tragedy would have been prevented and it would have helped to save Casey's life. Because of this, we, as a family, feel we must bring attention to these serious problems within our community health system, especially in regards to behavioral/mental health and addiction.

In June of this year, Casey entered the Aloha House substance abuse treatment program and successfully completed it & graduated. This was not his first time in rehab, but it was the first time he had ever completed a program. The program was 1.5 months long & he was clean & sober for the duration of the program & was transferred to a sober living facility. It was the longest Casey had ever been sober. The day he died, he was supposed to have had his drug rehab graduation ceremony.

He was on his way to living a clean & healthy life. He was happy, working, laughing, & spending time with his family.

Despite 2 months of sobriety, Casey relapsed over the weekend before his death.

Casey was found unresponsive Monday afternoon after he spent the day trying to check himself into detox 3 times at the hospital.

Our family was later notified about Casey's death & our worst nightmare was confirmed.

He was doing so well! He looked so good & he was so happy & feeling accomplished & hopeful about his future. We had our Casey back again. We were so incredibly proud of him!

Casey tried. He tried really hard! Harder than ever before. Our family & those who loved him tried everything humanly possible, with all our might & power to support him & get him the help he needed. We did not fail. He did not fail. We just did the best we could. He did the best he could. And we're trying the best we can to accept that.

This month is Suicide Prevention Month. And from our family's current standpoint, we want to do everything we can to prevent this from happening to someone else. So, for those of you who are battling addiction, who are struggling with mental illness, who are suffering from suicidal thoughts, we BEG you from the bottom of our broken hearts to please get help NOW! Go seek medical help, talk to someone, call the crisis or suicide hotline. Do SOMETHING, ANYTHING! And please know that you are worth everything, you are important, you matter, and you are loved! No one should lose their life like this and we would NEVER EVER want your family & those who love you to find out what this feels like. It hurts. It hurts like nothing we've ever felt before. Drug abuse takes lives. Mental illness needs to be treated. Suicide destroys families. We don't like to talk about suicide, no one likes to talk about it...and that is precisely why we MUST talk about it. Be strong! Stay alive!

Thank you for your time & attention. Please feel free to share Casey's story & this gofundme link. Casey's sudden & unexpected death did not prepare us for the arrangements & expenses of his funeral services. So, if you find it in your hearts to make a donation, it would help our family immensely & we would be forever grateful. We kindly ask for you to also please keep our family in your prayers. Thank you for your support, God bless, & much LOVE to you all!

Sincerely,

The Chargualaf Family
