Publishing the Electric Dirt Zine
$30,306 of $500 goal
With under-documented cultures and communities, there is often a gatekeeper. An archivist, sociologist, anthropologist, or historian decides who and what is and who or what is omitted from history. Someone with access to higher education and resources that many folks, especially in our impoverished region, do not have. That does not happen with Electric Dirt. We rely heavily on submissions. The underrepresented and misrepresented get to represent themselves. We get to define Queer Appalachia and the Queer South with our own images and truths. By embracing a combination of contemporary technology and social media, we are in a constant state of documenting our culture, community, lives and history/herstory. Electric Dirt is a place for us to share those truths and find each other.
We survive and even thrive through sharing tales of wildcrafting our queerness, foraging for pieces of ourselves within the intersections of coal mines and class, race and religion, food justice and colonialism. With your help, the first issue of Electric Dirt will be printed and ready to be shipped in the fall of 2017. We will be using Appalachian printers to contribute to our regional economy. The first run will cost $12,000 to print. This includes "green" printing, modest fees for collaborators, outsourced design costs, and postage to ship pre-orders and fundraising rewards.
Why are we asking for double the amount needed to print the first run? We are committed to giving half of the funds raised through our crowdsourcing campaign to QTBIPOC led projects and organizations working in the regions we celebrate. We understand and acknowledge that there is privilege in our numbers as a collective and, for some of us, our whiteness. The regions we celebrate through this project have a rich history of QTBIPOC making art and organizing around our culture(s). We are inspired by this work and we are mindful not to take limited resources from others in our community through our privilege. We believe that it is fundamental now that we share access to whatever resources we have: through our work, our projects, our social circles, our community, our bank accounts. We need to be able to share those resources and be open to restructuring oppressive systems that perpetuate white supremacy, especially the ones in our own lives. If we want the world to change, we have to be willing to change our own world. We will make the best zine we can with the amount we are able to raise, cardstock and length may vary, but we are committed to sharing the resources that we are able to gather during our fundraising campaign with our community.
We appreciate everyone that is able to contribute or share our campaign. Check out our website www.queerappalachia.com and please get in touch if you have any questions. All rewards will be shipped in the beginning in the fall of 2017. We will update you with the specific dates as it gets closer. Right now we are planning a September printing and October delivery.
Thanks to you, we were able to raise over $30K, it’s all you...and you...and you too! That $30K Is made up of individual orders, no indy bookstores or distro’s. That’s a lot of packing & shipping! We are super grateful for your patience during this time why we focus on getting all of the orders out. Any & all questions about shipping, we will get to all of them once all the orders have been posted. Pins will be in at the end of the month, 3D custom printed cookie cutters went out today, gemstone pipes next week. If you gave at a custom piñata level & you have not heard from us, check your email associated with your GFM.
We opened up orders today for zines, if you would like additional copies. Thanks to your overwhelming blunt feels , we will make shirts available again for purchase for a v. limited time in the next few days. The designs will be retired after this next print run.
The zine has a full-page ad in it, encouraging you to get involved in your local politics as much as possible. If you live in the areas that this project celebrates & explores, I encourage you to check out your local rural queers running for city & county offices / seats, $upport them anyway you can. If there are not any rural queers on your local ballet, maybe it’s time to change that? We will support you in any & every way we can.
We wanted to share some of the feedback we have gotten so far.
Our goal is to have all of the shirts and zines shipped out by the end of the week. If you haven’t gotten back to us from our email inquiry about your shirt size and style, your shirts going to be made in our second round of printing that is happening the beginning of January. We need that information ASAP. We will be reaching back out individually via email to those we haven’t heard from after the holiday. If your reward backing level included an enamel pin, we will not have those until the second week of January. Gemstone pipes, 3D Dolly Parton cookie cutters will be going out this week. Note card sets & playlist will be going out next week after the holiday. Nothing is being shipped separately, if you ordered the zine pin combo, we will not ship your zine until we have the pins in from the manufacture. If you ordered a shirt zine combo and we haven’t gotten your shirt information yet. We will not be able to ship your zine to you until we have the shirt to send with it.
Unfortunately this close to the holidays, we cannot guarantee anything for Christmas delivery but please know we’re getting everything out as quick as we can and first thing in the morning. I promise we will be at our local USPS every day this week before they open just like this load this morning.
Thanks to all of your preorders, we will be able to give away $25,000.00 in community micro grants in 2018! Think about all the ways you’ve always wanted to build community culture and content in Queer Appalachia and be on the look out for the call for proposals that will happen in the new year.
We've heard back from a lot of you that ordered shirts, but unfortunately not all of you. We're going to be printing shirts in two rounds. If we have your design style and size you'll get your shirt in the first round. If you haven't given us that information you will be in the second round which will happen sometime in January hopefully. If you have ordered a shirt and you haven't let us know your size and style preference please do so immediately @ firstname.lastname@example.org
