Hello.
My name is Miia Ashley and I am an artist living in the Bay Area, California. I've recently moved to the Bay Area from BedStuy, New York. While I was living in New York I recieved my MFA from The Actors Studio Drama School. During my 3 years at ASDS I made some of the strongest artist connections a person could ask for. One of which was with an amazing actor/writer/director named Andy Harris. About a year ago Andy, myself and another ASDS alumni made a film in New Orleans called, "WORDS." I played Elaine.
About "WORDS":
"In the Lower Ninth Ward of New Orleans, all are welcome at The Slam Bar & Poetry Cafe. The Slam is run by Elaine, the tough proprietor who on any given night serves as MC, bartender, and when necessary - bouncer; all in an effort to make sure everyone feels welcome in her club. William, a preppy uptown yuppie, is an unlikely regular to The Slam. He's a talented poet desperate to share his unique gift, although he tends to just sit in the back of the bar alone, quietly taking in the performances. Extreme familial pressures coupled with a severe stutter are holding William back from mustering the courage to share his poetry. But as Elaine gets to know William, she challenges him to rise above his fears and to once and for all step up to the mic.
Filmed on location in the Lower Ninth Ward, WORDS is a soulful depiction of the city's artistic and cultural hospitality. It's a story of courage, friendship, and self-discovery."
This film has been accepted to a number of festivals but in particular The New Filmmakers New York Film Festival. It would mean the world to me to be able to fly to New York, my old stomping grounds, and be a part of my very first Film Festival! The festival is May 11, 2016.
I'm asking for help to purchase my flight, hotel, and transportations costs.
If you believe in art, or even just believe in me, I ask for your help. Anything to help me get across our beautiful Nation to The Big Apple. Whether you have a dollar to spare, five, or fifty. It truly would be a dream come true to see my movie, in person, on a huge screen. I believe in this project so much.
