Protecting Babies by Breastfeeding

Tax deductible
Help the Sacramento Breastfeeding Coalition raise money for our Fall conference: Reducing African American Infant Mortality Through Breastfeeding; A Cultural Legacy and Perspective. This event will be held Tuesday, October 31, 2017.

We seek to bring together community stakeholders to enlighten and brainstorm how to incorporate breastfeeding support into the larger city-wide effort to reduce African American child death, and strengthen breastfeeding support available to African American women.

To do this, we will have keynote speakers Kimberly Seals Allers and Brandi Gates, IBCLC to explore the cultural history of breastfeeding for African American women, the importance of breastfeeding for maternal and infant health, and discuss how the community can support African American women and families to breastfeed. See below for more information about the important relationship between child survival and breastfeeding.

Sponsorship funds will cover the honorarium/travel costs for our speakers, refreshments and food for attendees, supplies and resources to share with the attendees, and allow us to open this event free-of-charge so cost is not a barrier to attending and everyone that needs this information can get it! YOUR support will help launch this important community effort to protect the lives of African American children.

Thank you so much for your help with this very worthwhile event!

In Sacramento, breastfeeding rates among African American mothers is significantly lower than other ethnic groups. Additionally, African American children are dying at a rate twice that of children of other races and ethnicities. The four leading causes of death for African American children in Sacramento include sleep-related deaths, child abuse/neglect, perinatal conditions (such as premature birth), and third-party homicide.

Supporting mothers to breastfeed their infants could play a critical role in reducing child death from these identified causes.

Research has shown that breastfeeding reduces an infant's risk of dying from SIDS; reduces the risk of child abuse and neglect (perpetrated by the mother); and is life-saving for infants born prematurely or ill, protecting them from such illnesses as necrotizing enterocolitis (NEC), a deadly intestinal disorder that affects infants born prematurely.
