For every cause that is near and dear to your heart, there are a dozen worthy GoFundMe campaigns. This one is about saving the lives of individuals in the LGBTQ+ community through compassionate healthcare.

Driven by the need for LGBTQ+ specific medical services, Dr. Kathy Oriel opened her own practice in October 2017. She and her nurse, Melisa Arndt, turned an old Taco Bell on the west side of Madison, WI into a safe space for patients to receive both primary care and specialized treatment including addiction medicine.

Last year's flooding in Madison has left Dr. Oriel and her team in urgent need of an actual, physical space. General start-up costs aside, the devastating loss of her office could potentially leave hundreds of at-risk individuals without the medical care they deserve.

All funds collected will go directly to rebuilding Oriel Medicine.

If you are able to help in any other way - advocacy, networking, or volunteering your time, reach out to me via email.

On a personal note, Dr. Kathy Oriel and Melisa Arndt are incredible human beings. Over the past year, they've fought selflessly and tirelessly for the LGBTQ+ community by leaving well established careers at the University of Wisconsin to ensure vulnerable individuals are no longer discriminated against in our healthcare system. They've saved the lives of people I love. But their journey shouldn't end here; there are thousands of more lives of people you love who need Oriel Medicine.

Hey everyone. We just wanted you to know that we've fled our previous office space due to ongoing water issues after two flood and then a horrid leaky roof!

So: we're temporarily 'professionally homeless' but are working hard to find/renovate space that the communities we serve deserve!

We're caring for urgent existing patient care needs in our generous colleague, Dr Eric Phillipi's
space: Medical Procedures of Wisconsin.

Our temporary address for very limited evening and Friday appointment is:

1920 Monroe Street (1.53 mi)
Madison, Wisconsin 53711

Look for the "VeinCarePlus-Office Surgery and Vein Care". There is free parking right next to the building.
Just walk in the door (only if you have an appointment) and have a seat in the waiting area.

For those of you familiar with the Monroe St area, it is half a block south-west (away from Camp Randall)of Trader Joes on the same side of the street.

I took this photo right when Oriel Medicine opened after my first appointment in the new digs. I’ve seen acceptance signs before, sure. Lengthy ones explaining why the business has chosen to remove gender-specific restrooms. Flashy, colorful ones. But this one is my favorite. Partly because of the way Melisa beamed that she’d found one depicting a disabled person on the MOVE - ‘cause who says disabled people have to be stationary?! - and partly because it just *is.* Respecting others doesn’t require justification, or bells & whistles. Being accommodating doesn’t need to mean bending over backwards or getting a pat on the back. It doesn’t even need to be considered an accommodation. At Oriel Medicine, it’s just a restroom. For everyone. That’s what we are fighting for and that’s why I created this GoFundMe. The way Oriel Medicine treats human beings should be the standard everywhere, in every environment.

I’ve thanked all of you individually for your donations but I’m going to thank you again and encourage you to continue sharing the campaign. Your support has been overwhelming in the best way possible.

If you're into Twitter, my handle is @CandidCandiceL - you'll be unsurprised to see I am annoying on every possible platform but hey, this is important. Help me "retweet" and "@" people.

Again, you are all incredible. I just know Kathy's heart is so full with the outpouring of love & support she has received in just a few short days.
