Esta es mi tía, Thais Delgado - la segunda madre que me enseñó a abordar a la vida con la calma de los sabios y el entusiasmo de los niños. Hoy, mi querida tía Thais está pasando un duro momento de esos que la vida nos depara cuando menos lo esperamos. En su típico optimismo, ella lo califica solo como “un mal rato”. Recientemente, durante su chequeo anual, se detectó un tumor masivo que estaba comprometiendo varios órganos y tuvo que extirparse lo más rápido posible; desafortunadamente, nuestra familia no está en la posición financiera para cubrir una cirugía y tratamientos subsecuentes. Gracias a la conmovedora generosidad de amigos y familiares, me alegra poder anunciar que el "tumor" se eliminó con éxito. Los tumores, que resultaron ser uno muy grande en el útero y uno más pequeño en el ovario, han sido biopsiados y se ha diagnosticado cáncer en etapa 3; es un diagnóstico aterrador, pero no es el peor de los casos y estamos agradecidos por eso. Ahora es el momento de la quimioterapia, que desafortunadamente será necesaria y crucial, y medicamentos. Quiero que sepan que durante la primera parte de esta campaña, recaudamos lo suficiente para cubrir la cirugía y parte de la quimioterapia, y nuestra familia nunca podrá expresar lo que esto ha significado para nosotros. Desafortunadamente, es un tratamiento costoso y también hay una gran cantidad de medicamentos que representarán gastos adicionales. Continuamos confiando en su bondad, sus donaciones y su abilidad de compartir este mesaje con otros!
Quiero compartir un poco acerca de la persona a la que estás ayudando hoy: En 1996, Thais abandonó la investigación científica en el campo hematológico del Banco de Sangre de Caracas para dedicarse a su pasión, la enseñanza en las mismas aulas de la Universidad Central de Venezuela donde se hizo profesional. Por los últimos 24 años, La Profesora Thais ha transmitido sus conocimientos a miles de estudiantes que hoy en día son profesionales en bioanálisis; en esos años, La Profesora Thais pasó de ser hija, hermana y tía, a ser también esposa y madre. Siento que también deben saber algo que me quedó claro a través de una conversación que ella y yo tuvimos recientemente: la profesora Thais es el tipo de persona que prefiere dar que recibir, y tuvo sentimientos de culpa por necesitar y recibir ayuda en este momento; per ella no encontró consuelo en la idea de sobrevivir, sino en el hecho de que esa supervivencia significa que ella tendrá la oportunidad de compartir esa bondad y generosidad con otros en el futuro. Ese es el tipo de persona que te pido que ayudes hoy!

This is my aunt, Thais Delgado - the second mother who taught me to approach life with the calm of the wise and the enthusiasm of children. Today, my beloved aunt Thais is faced with one of those woeful challenges that life puts in our paths when we least expect it. In her usual optimism, she calls it only "a tough time"... Recently, during her annual check-up, a massive tumor was detected which was compromising multiple organs and had to be removed as quickly as possible; unfortunately, our family is not in the financial position to cover a surgery and subsequent treatment. Thanks to the heartwarming generosity of friends and family, I am happy to announce that the “tumor” was successfully removed!!! The tumors, which turned out to be one very large on the uterus and one smaller on the ovary, have now been biopsied and determined to be stage 3 cancer; it’s a very scary diagnosis, but not the worst-case scenario and for that we are grateful. Now, it’s time for chemotherapy which will unfortunately be necessary and crucial, and medications. I want you all to know that through the first part of this campaign, we raised enough to cover the surgery and part of the chemotherapy, and our family could never express what this has meant to us. Unfortunately, it is costly treatment and there’s also a host of medications which will represent additional expenses. We continue to rely on your kindness, your donations and your shares!
Just so you know a bit about this wonderful person you are helping today: In 1996, Thais abandoned scientific research in the hematology department of the Blood Bank of Caracas to devote herself to her passion, teaching in the same classrooms of the Universidad Central de Venezuela, one of the largest universities in Venezuela and her own alma mater. For the past 24 years, Professor Thais has transmitted her knowledge to thousands of students who today are professionals in bioanalysis all over the world. In the course of this tenure, Professor Thais has gone from being an adored and admirable daughter, sister and aunt, to also a remarkable wife and mother. I feel you should also know something that became clear to me through a conversation she and I had recently – Professor Thais is the kind of person who prefers to give than to take, and she felt guilty for needing and receiving help through this moment; her solace was found not in the idea of her own survival, but in the fact that that survival means she will get the chance to pay forward that kindness and generosity in the future. That is the kind of person I am asking you to help today!
