Perspective
Most of us lead extraordinary lives and never realize it. We get hung up on the minor inconveniences; my phone has no service, the bridge is up, how can 4 of us share one bathroom? We have the luxury of time and contentment which allows us to focus on what really doesn't matter. We take for granted that we have potable water, accessible, affordable food, a roof, a bed and a floor. It's so easy to forget how different the conversation is in most other parts of the world. We talk about granite counters and eating organic. They talk about staying safe and eating.
Our group of friends at Willard Square Home Repair, with your financial support, would like to embark on a mission. Don't be fooled into thinking this is an altruistic endeavor. This journey is completely selfish. We want to help people in another part of the world improve their lives and we want to walk a mile in their shoes. We want to better appreciate what we have by knowing intimately what others don't have. And hopefully we will take this impression and use it to change other peoples perspectives and potentially change the world. I am bringing along with me my 14 year old daughter and if somehow your small donation can help transform the mind of one individual that can somehow change the minds of many then consider that money well spent.
In February, through an amazing organization known as Surf For Life, we will help to build a playground at the primary school on Isla de San Cristóbal in Panama. This playground would offer the students benefits beyond physical fitness.
It will support strong play and social skills as well as contribute to a child’s ability to develop socially, cognitively and academically. We will work with the community to build the playground, including sidewalks around the playground area and potentially around the preschool that was built last year in Bocas Town.
The trip will be led by South Portland resident Lisa Bisceglia and former WSHR employee!
Here's How it works-
Surf For Life only partners with non profits working on the ground in developing countries to ensure that the project itself is chosen by the local community and its leaders, and will better the lives of all of its members in some way.
Volunteers (that's us) pay for the trip and the costs are divided in three parts. One part covers all in country costs, one part covers all materials and labor costs for the project, and the third part is a donation to SFL program development (they are a non profit). SFL donates an additional amount of money to the community non profit partner for where they see most fit if more money is raised beyond just labor and material costs.
We have created a Go Fund Me page to make donating easier. Our overall goal is to raise $28,800!! This would allow for nine of us to go and would also cover our airfair. If every client on our list of 2000 were to donate $20 we could raise $40,000! But not everyone will donate so please donate as much as you feel comfortable. Thank you for being great customers and friends and thank you for your consideration.
