Creating a Safe Space for LGBTQ Life in Uganda: The Pride Munyonyo Project.

We acknowledge that our society carries historical and divisive biases based on race, ethnicity, gender, age, disability, sexual orientation, religion, and political beliefs. Therefore, we seek to foster understanding and tolerance among individuals and groups, and we promote awareness through education and constructive strategies for resolving conflict.

After five years of coordinated consideration and analysis, a broad coalition has endorsed this proposal to establish an independent, staffed, funded LGBT center at Munyonyo as part of the Community’s commitment to diversity. While the LGBT community has worked and continues to work closely with other elements of the broader community, it is the widely-held opinion of all affected that this constituency shares unique—and potentially life-threatening—concerns that simply cannot be managed by non-specialists under a broader ‘diversity’ cloak. Visibility, voice, resources, and emotional support are important considerations in making Pride Munyonyo Resource Center safe for LGBT Youths, individuals and alumni. An LGBT Resource Center will create bridges to LGBT families, friends, allies, and donors. The formation of a LGBT Resource Center at Pride Munyonyo that is professionally staffed, has adequate administrative support and space and is centrally located will answer a critical need as identified by the community. An LGBT Resource Center will efficiently gather and organize Community resources and become the focal point for LGBT programming, services, education and outreach. LGBT Youth and Individuals at Pride Munyonyo Resource Center bring unique characteristics and concerns that may affect their career and academic experience. These concerns are diverse in nature; while parallel to those seen in heterosexual people; they usually require additional consideration in light of societal oppression due to sexual orientation and gender identity. These concerns include but are not limited to: the coming out process, the development of an identity in a heterosexually biased and gender- stereotyped environment without appropriate role models. Once must consider the impact of oppression, social isolation and alienation that can occur and lead to higher rates of depression, substance abuse and suicide in LGBT’s. Other difficulties can include negotiating living space as a member of the non-dominate culture within the framework of potential oppression potential isolation (or fear of isolation) from family and friends and the potential for hate crimes and violence toward LGBT individuals. The logical remedy for non-accepting and frequently hostile responses to LGBTs in society in general is through education. This education mission would be fulfilled by creating safe “drop-in” space; developing programming in support of visibility, education, and outreach; opening an LGBT library; providing advice, referral, and counseling; and maintaining stability and continuity in developed programs. A LGBT Resource Center should be located in the community neighborhood. An overall floor space of c. 3,000 sq. ft. should comprise conference rooms, offices, and library/computing resource space. Most important is that a steering committee be appointed without delay to recruit a director and community/Resource Center advisor, appoint an advisory board, and locate appropriate facilities and resources .

Pride munyonyo is community LGBT empowerment umbrella .it’s a non-profit Organisation and of our activities safe, accessible. We raise one voice for the voiceless LGBT people in our community or society. Traditional clothing for todays people
Most modern Africans wear Western-styled pant suits, shirts, dresses and shoes. Others continue to combine the old with the new, wearing traditional clothing, along with Western styles. Women’s kaftans and men’s boubous, are full-length embroidered robes.






We meet twice a week to exchange ideas and check on each other progress regarding the different assignment we are working on. We have also reflected on our past and acknowledged that we haven’t always handled challenging situation like The Uganda Anti-Homosexuality Act, 2014 (previously called the "Kill the Gaysbill" in the western mainstream media due to death penalty clauses proposed in the original version) was passed by the Parliament of Uganda on 20 December 2013 with life in prison substituted for the death penalty.We have come up with now what we call Pride .Be part of us Pride Munyonyo was originally established BY Mr Lukyamuzi Acram Musisi an lgbt actvists in Arpil 2012 with the ambition to help with LGBTQI persons from EastAfrica domestically within Uganda and more in africa . As our activism, reach and extent of our wrok grew to international rather than domestic, we together decided to let Pride Munyonyo become an independent organization that can reach its potentials and fulfill its domestic & international goals.
