Pride of Mel-Hi Fundraiser

The Pride of the Mel HI Marching Band is a vibrant part of our community, proudly representing our school at many community events. The Marching band was established in 1937, and inspires school spirit, enhances community image and augments student learning. Including preparing to make school history.

The Melbourne High School band has been nominated to march in the parade at the National Cherry Blossom Festival in Washington D.C., one of only eight other schools in the country to receive the nomination.

The National Cherry Blossom Festival is one of the capital’s largest spectator events, according to Events D.C. The festival celebrates spring, the gift of the cherry blossom trees, and the friendship between the people of Japan and the United States. The festival typically lasts about one month with daily events incorporating arts, culture, community spirit, and perhaps the biggest event, the parade.

Joshua Sall, Director of Bands at Mel-Hi, said the process to be chosen took about a year and was not easy.  "Audition materials, videos from us performing at the Melbourne Veteran’s Day parade, we had to send videos of our half time show and, letters of recommendation, so it’s been a long process."

Before the band can make the trip, though, it must reach a fundraising goal of $100,000, a large amount when they still have $25,000 to raise for their new uniforms.

The band uniforms currently worn by the Pride of Mel Hi have reached the end of their functional life. Styles have changed, such as our case and uniforms can no longer be purchased as old ones fall apart or our band grows.

Each student is expected to raise money for the trip. While the students’ are excited, Sall and the students still hope to raise enough money on their own to completely fund their trip and continue to raise money for their uniforms.

As is the case with most public schools across the country, the Pride of Mel Hi does not receive funding from Brevard County School District for the purchase or maintenance of marching band uniforms or attending prestigious events as this one. Therefore, it is the sole responsibility of the Mel Hi Band Parent Association, a not-for-profit 501c-3 organization led entirely by parent volunteers, to raise these funds.

The band has updated their current GoFundMe page to include the fundraiser to pay for buses, hotel fare and other activities while in Washington.
