Preserve NC Military History

The State Archives of North Carolina has within its Military Collection historical materials that document North Carolina’s military history involving its residents on the home front and enlisted military personnel. Their stories are currently waiting to be discovered, as they sit unorganized in a number of large or significant collections in the State Archives, with only the most basic descriptions existing for some collections. In many cases no descriptions exist yet at all.

Friends of the Archives (FOA) is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization that helps support the State Archives of North Carolina with funding for preservation, interns, programming and exhibits, acquisitions, and to help make collections more accessible.

We need YOUR HELP to protect and preserve these valuable military historical materials for the future. We are raising $9,500 to fund a contract archivist position for at least 6 months in order to complete this work for the State Archives and YOU the public.

Getting someone who has the training and experience needed to do this type of work is difficult unless you can pay them, and we need the funds in order to do so. All of the $9,500 raised will go to pay a contract archivist.

What was second-grader Leroy Leonard of Hickory Grove School thinking of when he made a crayon drawing for school of Nazi Germany airplanes flying over his house in North Carolina, and someone appears to be shooting them down during WWII? Such stories as these will be made more available through this funding.

Selected materials from this project will be digitized and made available to the public online in the North Carolina Digital Collections. Photographs from the collections will be put online through the State Archives’ Flickr page.

Updates on the work of the contract archivist will be posted here regularly, with links to press releases, digitized materials, and blog posts written about the materials and work being done. Your contribution to the $9,500 goal will make North Carolina military history come alive!
