Presenting Research on Polyamory at ESA 2019
My name is Charity Smith. I recently completed a Masters Degree focusing on Human Rights and Social Work. As part of my degree I completed an original research thesis titled Alternative Family Life in Canada:
The lived Experiences of Polyamorous Families in the Fringes of Legality. To do this I interviewed five families to gain a holistic understanding of their lives and their concerns when it comes to the lack of legal recognition as only monogamous relationships are considered legitimate families. In order to share this work (the first academic qualitative study of polyamory in Canada) I have applied to speak at several conferences in Canada and Europe (where I am based).
I have recently been accepted to speak at the 14th Conference of the European Sociological Association Europe in Manchester, United Kingdom, 20 – 23 August 2019. The theme of the conference is Beyond: Boundaries, Barriers and Belonging, which I feel is a perfect venue to share the results of this work.
I’m asking for support to help get to this conference. I have reached out to both my university and the conference itself but I am not eligible for support as I am no longer a student. Some conferences offer free or discounted tickets to featured speakers, but this particular conference requires me to purchase my own ticket and cover all costs associated with travel.
Attending the conference wills cost approximately €700, which is a financial hardship for me and I must register by May 21, 2019.
Conference Fee: €400
Flights Berlin to Manchester: €100-€150
5 Nights Accommodation at a hostel: €150
Your support would be greatly appreciated and helps me to advocate for polyamorous people around the world by spreading awareness of their lives and experiences.
Sincerely,
Charity Smith
