Cheryl Candelaria  CORONA, CA

On January 17, 2015 the Candelaria family faced a tragic accident when their youngest daughter, 19 month old Harper, was found unconcious in a spa. She was in full respiratory failure and cardiac arrest at the time Paramedics arrived. Harper was clinically dead for over 20 minutes. Once revived, she had no pupil dilation or reflexes. She was placed on a ventilator and machines were keeping her alive. Her condition was critical. Doctors didn't expect her to live through the night- let alone have hope for any positive recovery.

The week that followed was a rollercoaster, but being the strong-willed girl she always was, Harper's physical condition improved and she became stable enough for an MRI to be performed. Unfortunately, that MRI showed that she had suffered a severe diffuse anoxic/hypoxic brain injury (significant damage all over her brain). The neurologist told her parents that she would most likely need a tracheotomy and be ventilator dependent. That she would have severe handicapps and that she may even be in a minimally conscious state for the rest of her life. But Harper's parents and their community of supporters refused to accept his reality. Hope and prayers from all over the world were abundant. On day 9 her breathing tube was removed and she was able to breathe on her own! But she was not "out of the woods" just yet and remained in the hospital for a total of 6 weeks. She had a g-tube placed for nutrition. She began posturing or "toning" which was a sign of how severe her injury was. She suffered from severe "neuro-storms" and was on an extremely heavy cocktail of medications which made assessing her cognitive ability nearly impossible.

Harper was discharged to an inpatient rehab facility where her medication weaning began. Within weeks Harper was recognizing and smiling at her parents and 3 older siblings. She was following and tracking with her eyes and showing some miraculous signs of improvement. Harper went home 3 months later, coincidentally on her 2nd birthday. She was able to eat purees by mouth, had some head and trunk control and had purposeful, on command movement in her arms and legs. She is full of joy and personality. Many prayers have been answered and it's only just the beginning!

Harper is fighting- with an army of people around the world hoping and praying for a full return of all physical and cognitive functions. And there's more that can be done. Jeremiah and Cheryl are exploring all their options of medical interventions and therapies. Many of which are not covered by insurance. Harper is currently getting 6 days a week of different therapies. The family is often driving 150 miles per day! If you are able to financially come alongside the Candelaria family at this time, your gift will help them with basic needs like gas and meals and most of all- Harper's current and future medical expenses.

All financial gifts made to South Hills Church will be tax deductible and given to the Candelaria family. If you are a corporation wishing to make a tax deductible donation, please contact shannond@southhills.org.

Hi everyone!
Wow! Hard to believe it's been 2 years since this go fund me page was launched! Wanted to thank you all so much for the support we've received! Your donations were incredibly helpful in getting Harper alternative therapies that have helped so much in her healing and recovery.

We also wanted to let you know we have launched a fundraiser on a different platform. The you caring site takes a much smaller fee. We're currently fundraising to do another round of hyperbaric oxygen therapy, another stem cell infusion and complete a 3 week long intensive therapy session. Anything helps!

Thank you so much for partnering with us and for your continued prayers and support. From the bottom of our hearts- it's so appreciated. https://www.youcaring.com/harpercandelaria-738852

Hi everyone. This is Harper's mom, Cheryl. This is the first time I've had a chance to look around on this site and see all of your messages and support. I am completely overwhelmed. "Thanks" can't even begin to describe how Jeremiah and I feel.

I will be posting a more comprehensive update on what Harper's progress currently looks like on her Facebook page ( www.facebook.com/prayingforharper ) later this week! Our baby girl is definitely a fighter and we've never been more thankful for all God has done in our situation.

A few months ago Jeremiah and I made a little video of our story that some of you may not have seen. So I thought I'd share it here. I hope you all know just how touched we are by your love and generosity. There really aren't words to describe the overflow of emotion when we think about all the support we have gotten, even from complete strangers. We don't take that for granted and we pray for you all as well. That God would bless you in return for all you have done for us!

Harper is breathing on her own! Cheryl and Jeremiah both have been able to hold her, something they've been looking forward to for days. Harper is now having what doctors call "neuro storms" due to overstimulation by sights and sounds while she is awake. Please pray for these neuro storms to pass, for her to maintain her oxygen levels on her own, for her temperature to stabilize, and for peace and healing. Thank you for all you've given to the family during this time!

Thank you to everyone who joined us in praying for Harper! Harper has been moved to a new hospital down the street. She was stable enough to have an MRI, which showed multiple damaged spots on her brain. We won't know the extent of any brain damage for some time, but we are still believing in and hoping for full recovery! As of this morning, Harper's sedation and pain meds have been turned off, and she is awake and fighting. We are hoping this afternoon for her to be breathing on her own. Please pray peace over sweet Harper during this process. Please pray that she maintains her oxygen levels well & that she can continue to maintain them from here on out. Also please pray that she has no withdrawals from any of the sedatives or pain meds that she's been on for the past week. That way she won't have to take any other medication or prolong our stay any further than we have to. If all goes well, I (Cheryl) will hold my daughter (alive!) for the first time since before this terrible accident happened! A day I have been praying for.
