On Thursday, March 30,  a man ran over my dog, Lucie, right in front of me in the Rock Creek/ West Union area, off Bendemeer road. The person who did this, an caucasian man in a big white car, hit Lucie twice despite the fact that I was waving my arms, and screaming for him to stop. He looked at us, but did not stop. It was unbelievable and soul-crushing that he could so heartlessly crush my Lucie.

Lucie has already had a very hard life. She was rescued from an abandoned home in Hillsboro, and had likely been used for breeding. After finally opening up to our family and forming an inseparable bond with me, we all hoped her hardest days were behind her.

My family is beyond upset and can't possibly understand why or how someone could choose to target a life like this.

Lucie was admitted to the ICU at Dove Lewis after being initiall seen at Bethany Family Pet Clinic.  After a difficult weekend, doctors were able to control her shock and stabilize her vitals, reset a displaced hip, and get her a feeding tube. We are waiting to see how things go, if she will need further surgery, a tail amputation, or what other complications and rehab needs might arise. We are taking it day by day.

We want to thank everyone--from the bottom of our hearts--who has donated and shared this page--it means the world and we are so deeply humbled by all the love and support that has come to Lucie, me, and my family.

We are still seeking help for the tremendous costs, as we still do not have a final number from the doctors and don't know how much this will end up costing--depending on how Lucie recovers, she may or may not need surgery. But she will need lots of rehab and love. Thank you.

Update on the witness: The other driver who witnessed the incident and was kind enough to pursue the driver but wasn't able to get his license number. He found my daughter's post on Facebook and we have been talking with him, and a reporter from Hillsboro to see if more information about the driver comes forward.

Much love to everyone.

Un abrazo,

Alma & lucie

Lucie came home today! After doing very well after her surgery, we were able to discharge her from Dove Lewis and she is now being cared for at home. Her recovery will be difficult and slow but she is going to be okay. She hadn't eaten since Thursday and would only be fed through a nose tube but as soon as we got home, she ate a whole bowl. It feels so much better to have her at home with us and we can see in her face how much better she feels to be in a place she recognizes, surrounded by love. We all feel so blessed and lucky to know all of you and to have received your support, we can't tell you how much it has helped so far. Thank you for sharing this and spreading the word as these costs are tremendous and we continue to figure out how to pay it all back.

All my love,

Alma and Lucie

I have felt ill at the disrespect that can exist in people, but in the deepest part of my heart, I still want to believe in the goodness of people and the importance of respecting life in all forms. As for Lucie, she is too important to me to have chosen not to do everything in our power to help her--thanks to the generosity and love of all of you. I just want to say to everyone who has contributed --thank you for giving Lucie a chance to exist and to enjoy her life and for us, her family, to continue to love her.

Tonight, Lucie went into surgery after all since her hip went back into displacement, and her tail was amputated. All this has increased the total expenses significantly--we have already put over $10,000 on credit cards between Bethany Family Pet Clinic and Dove Lewis, and we don't know how much more it will cost to rehabilitate. So we will continue to hold this funding account open to help our family as we navigate this financially.

Thank you so much, we will keep updates on Lucie's progress.

Visiting Lucie in the ICU yesterday was a mix of so many feelings. Her eyes, which are usually bright and black seemed dull and nearly lifeless from the pain and heart medication she is on. But when I put my hand gently on her head and whispered to her, she lifted her little head as much as she could. A blanket covered her injuries so we couldn't see, but the doctor explained that she has at least one major fracture across the pelvis and her tail has been severed and fractured, and her hip is displaced on one side, possibly both. They still need to stabilize her vitals more before they can take better xrays of the rest of her pelvis and tail to see how much additional damage there is, but they feel optimistic that she will survive. If she continues to do well this weekend, they will try to do an initial surgery on Monday. We continue to pray and for Lucie, that her injuries are fixable, that in time she heals and is able to be the happy dog she was before this happened.

The costs will only keep rising from here, and depending on how many surgeries she needs, and what kind of recovery treatment she will need, this could go as high as $10,000.

I still feel very traumatized from all of this. I haven't been able to process why someone would do this to Lucie, or to me. I feel sick in my soul when I think about that. But seeing the willingness of so many people to help, so many of my family and people I have never met, it makes me see there is still goodness in the world.

Her condition is still critical but her vital signs are a little bit better than yesterday. We will keep updating everyone as we find out more. Please keep up your prayers for Lucie.
