“Happy Tears. 5 years of being Cancer Free. I wasn’t expecting to break down today, but I looked my Dr. in the eye and was able to count the blessings in my life since my diagnosis. LIFE is such a blessing.”
We read this Facebook post from our brother and friend, Michael “Pre” Pretorius and liked the post, loved the post, celebrated and together, breathed a sigh of relief.
When Michael was only 13 years old, he lost his father, Brian, to cancer. And when he was only 21, while attending Trevecca University, Michael was diagnosed with and beat the very same cancer. Want to know what kind of man Michael is? His fight was so spectacular, so brave, so awe-inspiring, Trevecca literally named the “Michael Pretorius Courage Award ” after him. Talk about a legacy.
On October 17, Michael celebrated being cancer-free for five years. One week later, he posted to Facebook again.

“Last week I received a call from my oncologist after what seemed to be clear blood test . . . Unfortunately, my cancer is back.”
We read this Facebook post and together, our breath caught in our throats, but not Michael’s. With the help of his wife, Amanda, anchoring to their dream of starting a family and readying himself to fight one more time, Michael wrote this song .

“It is not a song saying goodbye. It is a song of hope and the most important lesson I've learned from all of you in this life. The song is called - Teaching Me Love.”
Michael is not given to despair, resignation, or self-pity. He is a fighter. But there’s no way to soften the news: doctors have given him a 50/50 chance of survival. They found a golf-ball sized tumor between his spine and lungs, which they will try to surgically remove on November 18.
Together, it’s time to find our breath and pray for Michael’s healing, for peace, and for strength in the fight. This GOFUNDME is here for those that want to help the Pretorius family.
We can’t fight for Michael, but we can fight with him.
