Empower Up, Puerto Rico!

Last month Hurricane Maria, a Category 4 storm slammed into Puerto Rico with 155-175mph winds, devastating homes, knocking out power, and changing the way of life for Puerto Ricans and their fellow Caribbean neighbors in the Virgin Islands and in the Lesser Antilles. By now the entire world has understood the impact the storm has had on the lives of islanders, and the long term recovery efforts are under way.

Due to the limited and lack of effort by the government, many grassroots have taken it upon themselves to contribute to the long term recovery of the islands. Consider our approach the latest addition to helping nations get back on their feet again.

Originally our gofundme set out to raise money for portable generators and portable stoves, but as the weeks went on and the picture became clearer on what was needed-we have had to rethink our strategy on what we can actually do with the  $4K raised.

Because of all the changes that have occured 35 days after the Hurricane, we have decided to put the funds in two projects: one being an immediate food supply of dry goods and non perishable food items. This is a pressing need as the hardest hit communities have had next to nothing of a food supply. We cannot state this enough.

The second contribution are relief kits-environmentally friendly relief supplies that will not only aid families with food for immediate consumption, but supplies them with goods necessary to alleviate the day to day needs (aka the long run): such as solar powered light bulbs and chargers, water filter systems such as the EcoStraw, and seeds to help grow crops during the time when aid becomes scarce.

This idea was brought to our attention by "EcoKit Puerto Rico", a grassroots based out of New York that created wish lists on Amazon on what they suggested people buy so they could assemble kits of their own to distribute with their people on the ground. Our kits will not replicate theirs item to item, but we will create ones we feel we are able to considering our budget in addition to providing food. Check out their link here:

In November, our kits and food will be distributed to specific communities throughout the island. We will take it upon ourselves to venture to Puerto Rico to see their safe delivery. As of today we intend to help neighborhoods on the neighboring island of Vieques, a community in the urban sectors of Puerto Rico, and a mountainous region in the center.

Our goal is $5,000 but it is a rough estimate. We hope to surpass it so we can bring a considerable amount of kits and food to the communities, making life a little easier in the process for some Puerto Ricans.

When we have concluded our first trip, we hope our efforts will inspire you to help us make further trips to Puerto Rico and the Virgin Islands, of which we desire to help in a future trip.

As much as we should be concerned about the immediate needs of the populous, we should involve ourselves in the long term stability of these precious islands. They can only go as far as they can, and its imperative that our efforts can bring them one step closer towards recovery.

Aid our efforts. The littlest goes a long way. A lot of our donations have come from $10. Will you be our latest contribution?

If you have any questions, please don't hesitate to reach out. We thank you for your time.
