Power to The People's School!

Why The People's School?

When Janet Jones Preston visited her son in Ghana she found herself troubled by the number of kids on the street selling goods. As a long-time support worker in the Seattle Public School system she wondered why the children were not in school. She soon found that some families could not afford to provide quality education for their children. Knowing this, Jones took a leap and mortgaged her home in Seattle to fund what has now become The People’s School for Positive Education.

More than just a place for children to go, The People’s School provides a culturally affirming education based on the philosophy of Ghana’s first president, Dr. Kwame Nkrumah. The students are taught to be critical thinkers, responsible leaders, and exceptional scholars. This school aims to create a world where every child has the chance to make a difference, despite their family’s economic status.

Since its official opening in 2006, The People’s School has blossomed from an earnest effort by one person to a vibrant school with 260 students and 25 staff members. The classes range from staples, such as math and science, to specialized courses, such as Fante language and information and communication technology. From 2012 to 2016, the school boasted a 100% success rate on the exam required to enter senior high school; the national average was 43%.

Students and parents alike see such value in what the school provides that they contribute what they can to help it thrive. The Parent Teacher Association banded together to donate a well that could store water and help with sanitation, and a number of former students returned to contribute as teachers at the school.

How You Can Help

This school’s impact is felt and valued by the community surrounding it; you can be a part of continuing its legacy! Our goal is to raise $100,000- This amount would be held in a trust that would allow your donations to continually grow and empower the school in doing its transformational work. $5,000 will be allocated monthly to compensate the educators and staff members that make this work possible. (The conversion rate of US dollars to GH cedi, as  well as lower cost of living, work toward our fundraising benefit.)
