Generator Fund

It takes a community! Thanks for helping us reach our fundraising goal!

In the islands we are more vulnerable to unplanned power outages and other disasters. During the darkest days, we want our Co-op to be a community hub and sanctuary, a warm place for people to meet and gather, share resources, plug in cell-phones and other devices, and of course eat healthy and delicious food. With a new generator we can even host Game Night upstairs when the power goes out.

More about the project:
A generator will be installed that will enable us to remain fully operational and keep our food fresh. We have all been impacted during past outages when the Co-op has been unable to keep the doors open.  Now you'll be able continue to shop for all your favorite food, even during the worst outages.

As a non-profit Cooperative Association we are owned and controlled by our members, who are now comprised of nearly half of all Orcas Island households.

Since opening in 2014, our Co-op has experienced many power outages, and we are always disappointed to have to close our doors to our community. At the same time, installing a generator to run a grocery store and community space is complicated and expensive.

Why is it so expensive? Everything has to be hardwired together, and the electrical work is labor intensive. Its not something you just plug in. In addition, the generator won't be able to power everything at once, so the system has to be set up to cycle through the refrigeration units a few at a time, which adds to the complexity and cost.

Why does the Co-op need donations? As a non-profit Cooperative we don't operate with a huge bottom line, and at just four years old we need all our extra capital to reinvest in operations as we grow. We simply do not have the capital to do this project at this time without the help of our Members and community.

We would love to be able to install a generator soon to be better prepared for whatever storms and other disasters may be lurking on the horizon. In our island community we need to be able to rely on each other, and we want you to be able to rely on your Co-op to be a safe, warm, dry place to gather with your community.

Thank you for helping make this project possible!
