Saturday, the 27th of April around 7 PM, the dike at Ste-Marthe-Sur-Le-Lac breaches and water goes up quickly, forcing a hasty evacuation of the 6,000 inhabitants of the neighbourhood – one third of the town!

Jean-François, Mélissa and their 3 children, Louis-David (9), Victor (7) and Éloïse (4) saw from their kitchen the water rising behind their house. During the chaotic 10 minutes that followed, Louis-David knocked at neighbour's doors to warn them before the water got to them. The family barely had the time to pick-up a few things, catch the dog and cat and jump in the car to get away from the rising water and take refuge at Mélissa’s parents in St-Eustache. Everyone is safe and that’s the most important.

However, what they learned since breaks the heart – their home is part of the «condemned zone », between the 23rd and 29th avenues. It’s part of the zone that will not be pumped and the house will most likely be a complete loss. This includes all their goods on the ground floor, Éloïse’s room with most of her clothes and toys, Jean-François' home office, Mélissa's workshop with all her art and hand-made jewelry, without counting the toys and books from the living room that are all completely ruined. As they are still not allowed access, they don’t know if the goods and furniture on the 1st floor will be saved.

Worst yet:
the insurance will not cover anything, and the government is still not clear on what support it will provide.

You can imagine the horror and stress of losing everything, without knowing what help will come, when it will come, and to what extent.

In order to lighten a bit this burden, you can donate here in a centralized way to help directly JF, Mélissa and their children. Everything needs to be rebuilt, and no matter the amount they may receive from the government, this won’t come close to what they lost. This fund will be used to refurnish, rebuild, or as a down payment on a new house – in any case, know that the whole family thanks you for every dollar donated.
