Poultry farming for single mothers in Kenya

Donation protected
ABOUT

My name is Elin Wildlock and in October 2018 I started Föreningen Kodul Muga (Kodul Muga Foundation) in order to support girls and single women in Kochia village, Kenya. Our funds have been used for planting crops and building a poultry farm. In addition to that we arrange volunteer trips and try to prevent adolescent girls from dropping out of school due to periods and early pregnancies.

Our projects are funded by donations and the profit from earrings and re-created clothes that we sell on Instagram (@wasteendshere) and our website (www.kodulmugafoundation.com). Unfortunately, the sales and donations are not reliable enough to give a monthly income and therefore we would be forever thankful for any funds helping us to proceed with our projects.

ABOUT THE GROUP AND THE CHALLENGES OF A SINGLE MOTHER

The group Kodul Muga Women Cutter is a collective of 22 single women from Kochia in Western Kenya. The life in the village is very poor, especially for single mothers. At the loss of a spouse, the family loses their income which puts the mother in a difficult situation. Many of the mothers have several children and struggle to provide them even with one meal a day. It is not uncommon that the children are being sent home from school for not paying school fees and many can’t afford healthcare. Some suffers from HIV or cancer which makes their lives even harder. Our goal is that all mothers should have an income covering the costs for healthcare, education and food. In the future we hope to see an expansion of the group to support more women.

ACHIEVEMENTS

Since august 2018 we have been selling earrings and bandanas made by the women. Sales were split between the group members and used for planting crops outside their houses. Due to the dry climate, local experts in agriculture explained that the conditions wouldn’t be profitable for farming crops as a business, so together with the group they decided to use the funds for a poultry farm instead. The farm has now been built and the first chickens were brought in the beginning of June. The idea was to raise local chickens until the end of 2019 and buy layers for the profit.

The purpose of the farm is to give the women a functioning economy as well as enable them to run the business on their own in the long term. The farm has room for 2,000 chickens and due to the local experts, layers are expected to give 2 eggs a day during six months. After 6 months the poultry will be sold for the equivalent of 6,9 USD and the eggs are being sold for 2,8 USD for 30 eggs.

We are currently facing a disease spreading among the chickens and we lack the financial tools to stop it.

HOW THE FUNDS/ DONATIONS WILL BE USED

100% of the funds will be used in order to get the farm going by treating and preventing diseases and provide food for the poultry. As soon as the layers starts to generate profit food, vaccinations and salary for the women should be provided by the profit earned from the sales.

We would be truly grateful for any support we can get, as all donations contributes to sooner reaching the goal of getting all the women a monthly income for their families.
