Two years ago, a group of us were sitting in a classroom with multiple teachers. This was our Portuguese class, without much enthusiasm to learn the language and a limited care about their Portuguese heritage. At the start of last year, we finally got a wake-up call. A new teacher, permanent this time, named Mr. Serra, arrived out of the blue.
It was then that we began to learn, grow and appreciate Portuguese.We were motivated into learning, and soon enough our two minute recordings of mediocre Portuguese turned into 30 minute thoughtful discussions.
Our once chaotic class has turned into a group of students who desire more than just a class-worth of Portuguese a day. With our language skills strengthened, we wish to challenge ourselves in a foreign country. In specific, this year we learned about a small, Portuguese speaking country called São Tomé e Príncipe. With our teacher having lived there before, he introduced us to the beauty of this unknown country for us.
This year, a group of us hope to make our dream of traveling abroad true. We wish to visit São Tomé, and in the process, visit the magnificent capital of Portugal- Lisbon.
Most of these students are Portuguese-American, with descendants who have lived in a Portuguese speaking country for years. However, for many of these students they have not been exposed to roots of their heritage. This trip would allow them to broaden their knowledge and appreciation of their Portuguese heritage.
Many of us in this group would be paying for the trip out of pocket. Juggling school, our jobs, and extracurriculars, makes it nearly impossible to single-handedly raise enough money to travel to two continents.
With every little donation, we get one step closer to São Tomé. Here we can immerse ourselves in the language we love to learn, and interact with the people who speak it.
