Poonam's Tale of Hope in Bhopal

SOMETIMES A PICTURE HAS THE POWER TO TURN FATE AROUND:

My name is Alex Masi and I am an Italian photojournalist committed to spreading awareness, and supporting action towards children's rights and education.

In May 2011, 'The Photographers Giving Back Awards' assigned me a 5000 US dollars grant to create and implement a specifically designed plan, benefiting one of my subjects, Poonam - and her family, after noticing her in one of my pictures from 2009, revelling in the rain near the abandoned Union Carbide industrial complex, in Bhopal, Madhya Pradesh, central India, site of the infamous '1984 Gas Disaster'.


Since then, I witnessed the passion that is moving Poonam and her family along, and how a single possibility for change has been able to spark in them such a vibrant enthusiasm for life and its meaning.

I have started this Campaign to cover all the costs related to the long-term education of Poonam, 14, and her sister Jyoti, 15, while also assisting their elder disabled brother Sachin, 23, and their family in general.

Meanwhile, on my own expenses, I will be documenting their lives as 'our' two young sisters grow up to become strong, emancipated women.

Additionally, if the fundraising goal will be fully reached, funds will be employed to set-up an educational project for other children in water-contaminated colonies  of Bhopal, partnering with a trusted, established local charity.
