Polaris K-12 Chromebooks

My name is Jim Ruiz, I'm a library TA at Polaris K-12 in Anchorage, Alaska. I've been at the school since 2002, I'm a retired federal worker with two sons at this school. One of the things I've been priviliged to watch while employed here, is the dedication that the teachers have for these students. I've seen them work six days a week, spend money from their own pockets and put in more hours than they are payed for.  And they do it without complaining or asking for anything in return. We're a small school, we only have 482 students, and we are the only K-12 in Anchorage. We have an extremely diverse student body with students from all walks of life.

Our school has a 100 percent graduation rate, this is due to the effort of the teachers and students to be successful. One of the tools that we are lacking in, are Chromebook laptops. We only have 3 carts (90 laptops) for the entire school to share. This causes some of the teachers to be very limited with the time they can use to teach with them.  We have 2 carts with older laptops that are unfortunately not always in good working order. My hope is to be able to raise enough money to buy another cart (30 laptops)for the teachers to use in class.

As with every school district across the nation, our school budget has been cut drastically also. It would be nice to raise enough money to purchase the Chromebooks for this school year. The students in this school deserve these Chromebooks, they are bright, eager to learn and self starters in the classroom. They need very little direction from teachers and are community service oriented students. The teachers deserve the equipment to be able to teach these students what they'll need for the future. Everything is technology driven and we are a little behind.

I'm someone who honestly believes that teachers are underpaid for what they do. I've seen the dedication and love that they put into each and every student that they teach. These students are our future and we need to invest in them. I know that the teachers and the students will be absolutely thrilled if we can get another cart. The teachers don't know that this is being done because I've only asked the principal for permission to do this. I'm hoping to be able to surprise them all by being able to accomplish this. I would be honored and thankful for any help I could receive.
