In 2006, a group of close friends and advocates for the black LGBTQ+ community met at the house of Kiantha Duncan to form what was known as the Seattle Black Pride Board of Directors. Inspired by the Last Friday event and various other black pride that was happening around the same time in large cities such as DC, Dallas, Atlanta, and New York, the board successfully delivered the first Seattle black Pride.
The mission of the Seattle Black Pride was to bring something to the city that had never experienced before that revolved around creating safe spaces for LGBTQ+ people of color to socialize, direct conversations that were culturally relevant, and acknowledge the contributions that this community has brought to the region.
Between 2006-2009, Seattle Black Pride ran on a model that involved three days of events. The most notable was the of seminars, events, and parties. Each year’s lineup provided fun and exciting experiences for attendees of all ages.
In 2017, Steven Sawyer, Autry Bell and a small committee of community leaders all came together to pick up where the Seattle Black Pride Board of Directors have left off. This new Pride Organization formed through POCAAN, a non-profit located in the heart of Seattle that provides social services and access to healthcare for people of color. The pride has been named: Pacific North West Black Pride to reflect on the broader vision for the event. PNW Black Pride continues to celebrate the resilience and tenacity of the black LGBTQ+ community by offering four days of Events. Including a Black Queer Film Festival, Health and Trans Symposium, Cultural Arts & Health Wellness Festival, House Balls, and Faith-Based service.
