In our Italian society I thought there were no slaves but ... it is not so!
When I heard R.'s story, a young Sri Lankan woman, I realized that slavery exists and still has many victims.
This poor young woman carries behind her a load of tragic events, first as a child when her father died, then as a young wife of a fellow countryman in Italy who, after a while, began to beat her, hence a painful separation mainly from a son who she could no longer keep and the beginning of a path of imprisonment that is destroying the will of this poor creature!
Because of separation clauses, R. was obliged to keep her son in Sri Lanka with a monthly check for school and livelihood but, unfortunately, for lack of work and lack of money, to her disgrace she began to ask for loans from Sri Lankan lenders, believing she could return the credit, but alas this was impossible.
She tried to ask the Bank but, with no stable job and guarantees, the answer was no.
The difficult times brought by the economic crisis prevented her from earning enough money to repay the loan, and as a result, the debt increased and increased to a figure that is currently some tens of thousands of euros.
The compatriots who offered the loan now show themselves to be criminals, with the threatening methods of mafiosi: if she is slow to return the monthly installment, the cell phone becomes hot with threats mainly concerning her elderly mother and son in Sri Lanka, and causing unbearable terror in the heart of R.
And no matter how much money she returned to these rascals, everythign she had, much more than her original debt, she can get rid of it, indeed the sum increases!
She works by day for a family, and in the evening she washes dishes in the restaurant, but of the money she earns through so much hard work, there is nothing left!
The poor woman has often turned to Caritas and friends, they all did the best to give hope but not enough, the debt is too big.
It therefore requires some extraordinary economic intervention, perhaps even a loan, which can be returned through the labor and the income that she produces every month, but now in a climate of serenity: not just the money to save her existence, but the generosity of the people who in this case can "return" the life to this poor woman, victim of exploitation, poverty, loneliness and violence.
Here is an urgent, generous contribution that can only be found through the union of many good and disinterested people who will return the full amount offered in monthly installments starting right away and therefore through the joint participation of more people, all agree to save a creature who slowly dies in desolation and desperately asks for help for her salvation.
Please help us, and help her, this poor prisoner of a story that is crushing her soul.
And recall the rabbinical aphorism, which says, "If you save a life, you have saved all mankind!"
