As most of you will be aware, I am a mature student meaning funds are pretty tight!
I left working the usual Mon-Fri, 9-5 job to go back to university and pursue a career in climatology/geoscience. I really want to make the most of this time studying and seize as many opportunities as I can - and whilst the university offers many opportunities (sometimes with the help of a little funding) - they are generally quite expensive.
Climatology and researching the effects of climate change (both volcanology and glaciology) is something I am very passionate about. Climate change affects all of us and is becoming a very pressing issue... I want to ensure that I do everything I can to be involved in projects to help undertake valuable research and bring awareness to society. Whilst I am very early on in my academic journey, I want to seize every opportunity I can to develop my knowledge and skills in these areas and hopefully use these skills to give back and help create a more sustainable world and so we can continue to enjoy this beautiful place we call home. The more field-work opportunities that I can do alongside my studies the better chances I have to really pursue this as a long-term career.
An opportunity is coming up this summer to work for a month in Tenerife monitoring the volcanic activity on Mount Teide (the project is called GeoTenerife). This will be an amazing opportunity to help develop my field and lab work skills, as well as exposing me to real world issues such as geological hazards and understanding the relationship between volcanic activity and climate change.
Most people are aware of climate change and have felt or seen the impacts of this at some point... I believe it is crucial for more people to be studying and understanding these areas. This is something I wholeheartedly want to dedicate my time to and really make a difference, whether it be monitoring geological hazards for the safety of others, or monitoring the effects of climate change and understanding how positive changes can be implemented to mitigate and remediate these impacts.
If this is something that resonates with and you feel you would like to donate towards, I would be very grateful.
Any donations that I do kindly receive will all go towards funding this project, and I will be sure to share my experience and findings with you.
