Planes, Trains and Wheelchairs Film

Purpose

Planes, Trains and Wheelchairs is an informative documentary intended to show everyone that regardless of your abilities, travel is entirely possible with correct planning. Not only is this intended to inform people of the options when travelling, but it will also help businesses and travel centres learn about the many obstacles to be addressed. The hope of this documentary is to initiate the conversation of eliminating barriers when travelling. The film will be presented at hospitality/tourism conferences as part of an awareness campaign that I hope will drive change in the industry.

I, Drew Cumpson, suffered a spinal cord injury on May 10, 2011, and I set my mind on accomplishing my goals. I went back to school to finish my Bachelor of Commerce degree in Hospitality, Food and Tourism Management at the University of Guelph. I have become an advocate for people living with disabilities and I push forward every day to show that living with a disability does not mean your life is over.

As quoted in an article written about me in 2012 by the University of Guelph,

“I’d like to do a project on disability,” says Cumpson, adding that he wants to help the hospitality and tourism industry become more accessible.

I am now working towards making this into a reality with this documentary six years later.

Who It Will Benefit

The Disabled Community – According to the Rick Hansen Foundation, approximately 15% of the world’s population (more than 1 billion people), live with a disability which creates a large target market that businesses should focus on. This film can be used as an educational tool to increase awareness of accessibility in the hospitality and tourism sector. As our population ages, the need for accessible travel will increase. It will help those living with disabilities see how to plan a trip and inspire them to achieve their own travel goals.

The Hospitality and Tourism Industry – This film is intended to initiate and continue the conversation about accessible tourism with businesses in the hospitality and tourism sector. There are several issues and barriers that prevent those living with disabilities the opportunity to travel and it is time to change the way businesses look at accessible travel. The accessible travel industry is estimated to reach 202 billion dollars by 2025 (Bowtell, J. 2015).

Where the Funds Will Go

We are budgeting $65,000 for travel, caregivers, film crew, camera gear, and post-production plus $2,000 for fees.

Caregivers (2):                                         $10,000
Film Crew (3):                                           $25,000
GoPro Camera + Accessories:        $2,000
Post Production:                                     $8,000
      Total:                                                        $45,000
GoFundMe Fees -                                   $2,000
      Total:                                                        $47,000

Funding Timeline

The timeline for the documentary will take place throughout 2019 and will share the experience of planning a trip with a disability, speaking at conferences and changing the perspective people have on accessible travel. Funding for the documentary will help us create a film that will ultimately start the ball rolling on changing the tourism industry to become more accessible.

What it Means to Me

As a first-time director, the support for this film will help me create change not only within the hospitality and tourism industry but inspire those who feel they are not able to do something that it is possible to accomplish your goals.

My Gratitude

Any assistance with this project would be extremely appreciated as my goal in life is to create change for accessible travel and prove it is possible. You can live a fulfilling life with a disability and accomplish your goals and live your dreams.
