Send a piano to Cuba
Yes, we want to donate a big heavy concert piano to a music school in Havana!
My name is Eralys Fernandez, a Cuban pianist based in London. I am one of many artists to have trained at the 'Conservatorio Amadeo Roldán' under the wonderful professor Olga Valiente. Despite being one of the most prestigious institutions in Cuba, its existing pianos are in a poor condition. The Conservatory has struggled to get access to new pianos and there are no piano producers or retailers in Cuba.
Cuba is famous for its rich history in the arts and culture; providing free education to the highest of standards for all its citizens. The Conservatory Amadeo Roldán is free for all its students.
However, despite the Cuban government’s investments in education, they lack many of the resources, equipment or infrastructure needed to support that provision. In the case of music schools such as the Conservatory, instruments and related accessories are often scarce. What they have is often worn down. Many of these resources are extremely expensive to purchase in the international market and often Cuba is denied access to goods because of the full trade embargo imposed by the United States since 1961, which the Cubans refer to as a blockade.
55 years of the US blockade have clearly had a negative impact on the country. Even now, since Cuba and the US have re-established diplomatic relations, the blockade remains firmly in place. What is more, if it were lifted tomorrow, the damage wrecked on the Cuban economy and society would take many years to overcome. As long as the US restricts Cuba’s trade and relations with the rest of the world, it will continue to require extraordinary acts of solidarity by people like you around the world to resolve some of the countries scarcities.
This project is being supported by Cubanos en UK, an association of Cubans living in Britain. Several talented professional Cuban musicians living in England have committed to perform in series of classical music concerts, to raise the funds necessary to cover the cost of transporting the piano – no small fee!
We need to raise £5000 to buy a second hand concert piano in good condition. Unfortunately, the cost of a new concert piano is beyond our capacity.
Buying and transporting a concert piano is a costly project so we are seeking donations and assistance from individuals, trade unions, community and political organisations, cultural associations, via crowdfunding and social media. Please contact us if you would like your group to be listed as a project sponsor.
With your help we can make a difference for hundreds of music students in Cuba. And bring joy to their teachers, some of whom have dedicated most of their lives to training students in the Conservatory.
There are several ways you can support this project:

Massive thanks to everyone who have so far contributed to this project; we are now waiting for a replacement of new piano hammers ordered from Germany. In 4 to 5 weeks the piano will be ready to be sent to Cuba.
However, any further donations will be very welcome and put to good use. Any extra money left over after paying for the fixing of the piano, shipping and the purchase of a piano stool, will be donated to the Conservatory Amadeo Roldan. We will update on the cost as soon as we receive quotations and invoices.
Come to celebrate with us on the 21 January at Bolivar Hall at 7:30pm in the Send a piano to Cuba – Gala concert with Ann Liebeck and Marcos Madrigal.
