 NEW ORLEANS, LA
On March 8th, 2017, the organizers of the Women's March have organized A Day Without A Woman, where women are encouraged to stay home from work, not shop, wear red, and otherwise demonstrate the importance of women to our society.  As a female piano teacher ( www.PianoNOLA.com) with mostly female students, I have decided it would be unnecessarily punishing to cancel my lessons on Wednesday, but I want to support the day and, to that end, I intend to raise funds for an organization in Louisiana that provides a great deal of aid to sufferers of violence against women (although also men).

The organization I've chosen is STAR (Sexual Trauma Awareness and Response).  STAR provides sexual assault survivors an understanding  advocate in the hospital (or elsewhere), free counseling, legal aid, and a 24/7 hotline for survivors to call.

STAR's mission:
To support survivors of sexual trauma, improve systems response, and create social change to end sexual violence.

Did you know that Louisiana provides no funding for programs to aid survivors of sexual assault, abuse, et al?  Right now, STAR is able to provide services only in Baton Rouge, New Orleans, Alexandria (and satellite office in  New Roads, LA).   Their services are sorely needed statewide and thus financial support is vital to enable their work.

So, if like me, you wish to support the #DayWithoutAWoman but find skipping work not feasible, please consider donating a small amount to this fund, which PianoNOLA.com will give in its entirety to STAR.

A
gain, funds will go 100% to the S.T.A.R. organization.  The funds will be withdrawable by STAR's director of development only unless further updates posted.

Did you know that STAR has only been operating in New Orleans since January 1, 2016. In that time, they've served the following number of survivors:

o Hospital Call-Outs: 217

o Hotline Calls: 494

o New Unique Counseling, Legal, and Advocacy Clients: 294

And they do all of this at no cost to the survivor. Please consider donating to STAR today so they can continue their much-needed work here in NOLA.
