If you haven’t already heard, Mom has been diagnosed with pancreatic cancer. In general, the prognosis for pancreatic cancer is very poor. However, after extensive testing, her docs at Georgetown University Hospital determined that she’s a candidate for surgery (specifically the Whipple procedure, for those of you who like to Google stuff). This alone puts her in a better range of prognoses – only about 20% even qualify for the procedure. The surgery itself is pretty high-risk. However, if it goes well, her prognosis improves substantially. Recovery from Whipple surgeries are slow and challenging in and of themselves… and even if everything goes great, the long-term prognosis is still nothing to be excited about.
As you know, our Mom and Dad are a dear and darling pair. They’ve been married for well over 50 years and delight in each other’s company and mutual support. My brother and I love our folks dearly, but we both live thousands of miles away. Supporting them through this intense process - and whatever subsequent fate befalls them - will be a serious challenge. Jimmy was recently laid off from work and is just starting his new job search. I (along with my very lovely wife) am actively involved in raising my two young boys (3-years and 16-months old), making it all the more difficult to jump across the country as needed. We are anticipating that there will be many cross-country trips over the next year, some likely on short notice. Additionally, we want to make sure Mom and Dad have access to all the in-house care, transportation support, and any other medical support they need to keep them both physically, mentally, and emotionally strong.
When it comes to asking for help, Mom and Dad have always erred on the side of pride and privacy. This time, however, the stakes are too high. They need our help, and we need yours. We appreciate every single donation you can make to support their path to recovery, restoration, and our efforts to support them.
