Photography with Friends

A successful 8 week photography project was just completed with a Christian youth center.   Anna Kinchen  wishes to continue this photography project that involves the children of the Friendship House of Jesus in Bainbridge, Georgia.  The Friendship House is an established organization that leads children and teenagers in the community to a personal relationship with Jesus Christ through offering free after-school and summer time services.

The mission of Anna's photography project is to build a sense of community among youth while also providing them with a creative outlet for their emotions and ideas. The intention is to provide each individual child with tools to create their own artwork, all the while giving them the opportunity to be productive, use their imaginations, collaborate with others and build a foundation of confidence and self worth.  Children will follow a curriclum based program in which they will actively play a role in taking pictures, curating a show, framing, matting and exhibiting. Each child will be expected to use their cameras towards capturing images that they feel personally relate to them.  Children will be encouraged to take a documentary approach and photograph all that inspires them; whether that be through classic portraiture, candid lifestyle imagery, landscape and/or conceptual photography. Each child will be permitted to build a portfolio of images that can then be used in conjunction with other projects such as:

·       Collages and Mixed Media Art Works (All Ages)

·       Matting and Framing (All Ages)

·       Gallery Displays (All Ages)

·       Digital Enhancements (Teens)

·       Marketing, Graphic Design, Web Design (Teens)

Funds raised by donators through Go Fund Me will directly benefit the photography program and allow for the purchase of used photography equipment (cameras and film) as well as cover the cost of processing, printing, framing and exhibition supplies.  The next photography program will begin "Fall quarter" (August-December) at the Bainbridge campus, followed by another photography program "Winter quater (January-May) at the Donalsonville campus.

The intended use of the images taken by the children is to be displayed in a fine art exhibition and potentially sold and marketed.  The desire is that all proceeds go back to the Friendship House to be used towards the needs of the children involved.   However, the possibilities in which the images can be used are endless and are not limited to:

·       Book Publication

·       Retail Calendars and Cards

·       Marketing Materials for the Promotion of Friendship House – Website, Brochures

·       Portfolios of Teens Looking for Art Scholarships and Resume Experience

“I believe this project can relate to children of any age and background.  Art does not discriminate. Photography is such a wonderful means of self-exploration and can be effectively used as an emotional outlet. My hope is that I would help them develop artistically through a religious foundation and provide them relevant business experience.  I would teach them that artwork consists not only of drawings and paintings. With endless subject matter, these children have the potential to visually create what they want to be a part of.  Aside from a historic role that photographs play, I am allowing them to productively be a part of this era where digital media and social media are on the rise. There is always a need for work of an artistic nature. It is an opportunity that they could develop from and potentially take very far. If anything, through the lens, they will gain a deeper appreciation of their surroundings and beauty that God has created all around us. “ –Anna Kinchen
