My name is Phoebe. I'm a first year Global Studies major at the University of Arizona.

When I was a freshman in high school, I dropped out with the intention of never returning. I disliked the system, I disliked people my age. That summer, I traveled with a local environmental education organization to Costa Rica for 12 days. It was a life changing experience. I returned to the U.S. with my eyes open, inspired to study our world as a whole. A little over a year later, I was able to live in Panamá for a year with a host family, going to agricultural trade school. Now I’ve graduated high school with straight As, and am enrolled in the Honors College at U of A.
I'm raising money to fund my trip to Costa Rica and Panamá as the International Programs intern with the same organization, Ironwood Tree Experience. In Costa Rica, I’ll get to guide students as they navigate a new world, a world that I understand more than I ever imagined I would when I went four years ago. We’ll be visiting a leading environmental university, doing service work, and promoting sustainable, ecotourism with our very presence. Then, after my group’s 12 days are up, I’ll stay in Costa Rica and travel back to visit my host community in Panama in an attempt to eradicate the stereotype of the American who comes once and never returns. I want to return and prove that my experience in Panama is a part of me, and that I, as a privileged global citizen, am thinking constantly about how to give back to the community that gave so much to me. In Panama, I’ll be doing community service work designed to improve the areas I remember to be in the most need of aid, and working on gathering research to continue a project I’m starting next semester with a faculty member of the University of Arizona.
Your donation would help me travel to Costa Rica and Panama, change the lives of my younger peers, and recreate the image of the flighty American in Changuinola, Panama (as well as other places throughout Central America). Thank you so much for your consideration!
