PhD Applications are Expensive

Hi,

I'm Ashleigh, wanna-be PhD-in-psychology holder. I'm 25, have a master's degree in psych, and am currently working at the Maryland Psychiatric Research Center in Catonsville, MD as a research assistant. I like gaming and hiking, scifi, eating delicious food, and reading anything I can get my hands on.

                                               That's me

It's been my dream to go to grad school since I realized that psychology and especially research were my passion. From the first day of Research Methods during the summer of my junior year at Bloomsburg University, I knew that this was what I wanted to do for the rest of my life. I applied for and was awarded the URSCA grant the summer of my senior year of undergrad, and got to work full time doing behavioral neuroscience experiments with my mentor.  The experience and subsequent publication were priceless.

I knew I wouldn't make it into a PhD program right out of undergrad. My resume wasn't beefy enough with research, and my GPA wasn't a dazzling 4.0. I did, however, get into the master's program at Boston University.

The year it took to get my master's degree was one of the best of my life. I learned so much about the field, proved to myself that I could succeed (and thrive) at the graduate level, and made true, life-long friends. I moved away from animal research into the terrifying unknowns of human research, and handled it rather well. I realized what really interested me more than anything else was cognition, specifically the effects video games have on cognition.

I took a two year position at the MPRC after graduation, and continue to learn new things every day. Our work with nicotine and attention, and nicotine/cognitive training with people with Schizophrenia keeps me challenged, and has made me a much better researcher.

Which brings me to the present obstacle: applying to PhD programs. I now  have research experience, competitive GRE scores, the GPA, good letters of recommendation, and the tenacity to comb through programs for the perfect fit.

Most of my applications are completed, and include Catholic University of America in DC, Florida State University, UC Santa Barbara, Utah State, Kansas State, UT Dallas, NC State, and ND State. All of the professors I'd like to work with are focused on cognition and some form of gaming or cognitive training. I even have an interview scheduled at UT Dallas later this January (!). The applications and related materials (transcripts, sending GRE scores, etc) have cost me just under $700, which I've paid out of pocket so far. This is a month of rent. This is a student loan payment.

What I am asking from you is to help a dreamer make her dreams come true. Any little bit will help, and will be appreciated more than you could  imagine.

Thank you from the bottom of my heart.

Love,
Ashleigh
