Rescuing Petite Urban Pooches

Petite Urban Pooch is not just a business, it is a community. A community of people who love dogs and who appreciate PUP because we also love dogs.

When I bought Petite Urban Pooch in 2016 I was excited to build on the success of the previous women who had owned PUP. With 3 years left on the current lease, I knew I had the time and the creativity to take the business to the next level. One year later, in December 2017 I was informed that the lease would end by May 2018 and I had 6 months to move the business. Nikki and I had just hit our stride and our two and four-legged customers were happy with our service. We feared that we would not be able to save the business.

Down to the wire, we signed a lease on a new location in late April with an anticipated opening in early June. What appears to be a luxury service is more than it seems to our small dogs who suffer from separation anxiety because of previous trauma or new puppies in the training stages or older and younger dogs who love to play and romp versus waiting alone at home for their owners to return from work. PUP is unique in that it only caters to small dogs so many of our clients do not have other caretaker or similar daycare options available to them.

Ivanka is a 9-month old Bolonka weighing in at 5lbs. Her owner owns his own business and found that taking her to work with him was very disruptive and he did not want to leave her alone all day.  PUP has been his go-to place for her and she loves every day she attends "Puppy School".

Olliewood is a rescue pup who suffered from severe separation anxiety when he was adopted by his owner.  Recently retired, Ollie's owner plans to travel more because she knows he has the care that is just like home allowing her to travel without worry.

Each of our pooches has their own unique story of why they come to a small-dog only daycare environment.  Intimidation by larger dogs, fear of large packs of dogs, a just-like-home environment that feels more comfortable when you are teeny tiny! PUP is a place that serves a need for our clients and their dogs.

So like our boutique and customized service we decided to fund the startup of the new Petite Urban Pooch location with a more intimate funding plan.  Instead of a traditional bank loan approach, we are choosing to engage our friends, customers, family & supporters of locally owned businesses to come along on the journey with us.  This gives our small business room to succeed without incurring further debt. We want our community to be included in our success and to feel like they have made a contribution to something that is special and important to them.

The renovation of the new daycare space is going to require immediate funding. We need to reconnect utilities and to build some structures inside to accommodate safe entry and quiet places for napping. Durable and easy to clean flooring will be installed to ensure a safer footing for the pups. The funds will be used to purchase new furniture, play structures and fixtures plus create a safe outdoor space. We want to maintain our Urban Pooch upscale look so we will be adding some decorative touches to make it an amazing space to bring your furry friend.

We have also created an Urban Pooch Lounge & Snack Bar concept to provide another service to all small dog lovers in the North End community and beyond. A place where you can come with your pooch for playdates, to do remote work, attend dog-centric social gatherings or to just watch pups at play at the sit up bar viewing window. Imagine buying your pooch our housemade "Dog Beer" and hanging out in the Lounge for an hour on a rainy afternoon. Creating this environment will also require startup funds to invent the first Dog Lounge in Halifax!

Nikki and I are two women who love what we do and we want to continue to offer excellent service and a unique experience for both our clients and our beloved pooches. We are asking your assistance in supporting our move to the new Agricola Street location by contributing to our GoFundMe campaign. Our community has invested so much trust in us already and we value and appreciate all that you have done for us.  We remain deeply committed to making the next PUP experience even more unique and special to return the favour!

Everyone who chips in will be invited to our Grand Opening later in June!
