Peter Wants to Walk Again

Help Peter Walk Again!

Dear Friends and Family,

Some of you may know, on January 13, 2018 our father, Peter Montgomery, suffered a spinal stroke causing a spinal cord injury (SCI) that led him to become a T-6 Paraplegic Incomplete. This means that he is paralyzed from his mid-chest down with partial paralysis in his right leg and complete paralysis in his left leg, leaving him unable to walk. He also has sensory deprivation mid-chest down that makes him unable to distinguish between dull and sharp touch; as well as, temperature variations.

Anyone who has met our dad knows what a determined and optimistic person he is. Through all of life’s uncertainty, he has maintained a positive outlook and helped others in any way possible. Although the doctor’s prognosis from his SCI is uncertain and we are still awaiting a diagnosis, he has not accepted this as his personal reality and is exemplifying the strength of his spirit by challenging himself everyday. Through this trial he has been motivated and eager to put in the hard work necessary to regain the ability to walk, something many of us take for granted, so that he too can experience the little joys life has to offer, like back packing with his children, river rafting, and dancing with his daughter at her wedding.

The road to walking again will be intense, but our dad is prepared to do everything in his power to get there! Although we are currently looking at a two-year (at best) time frame for his recovery, it is crucial to have continuous physical therapy throughout this journey and to ensure that his medical needs are met.
Donations will go towards medical and physical needs, such as: durable medical equipment, wheelchair costs, medications to alleviate his constant pain and muscle spasms, and various physical therapies including PT, acupuncture, swimming, cycling and massage. The most important aspect for his progress will be his acute rehab at SCIFIT, an extremely rigorous, holistic physical therapy regimen specifically customized for each individual SCI patient’s particular needs for the fullest recovery possible.

Below are links to some of the organizations that have helped to inform, educate, connect and inspire our father.
We would like to share these resources for people in Northern California also affected by a SCI.

We appreciate all the love, support and positive vibes we’ve received and are so thankful for your donations.  We would also like thank all the Occupational and Physical Therapists; as well as, the doctors and nurses who have and continue to help our dad.
Please share, so our dad’s story can reach as many people as possible and hopefully help a few people on the way!
