Peru is your quintessential small Nebraska town. Filled with people whose hard-working nature can only be out measured by their willingness and drive to help those around them when in need, and they are doing just that. Neighbors helping neighbors, coming together as a community to once again face devastation caused by the Mighty Mo. But they need our help.
Like many towns in Nebraska, Peru was impacted by flooding when the levee north of town broke on Saturday, March 16th, 2019. In addition to forcing people out of their homes, it has also compromised the water treatment plant leaving residents of Peru with only what is left in the water tower. Though a timeline for relief is in the hands of mother nature, it is certain that the water tower will empty before regular water service can be established--despite the town's best efforts to conserve.
I'm proud to call Peru my hometown. It is near and dear to many who have grown up there, have family and friends there, or who have passed through the halls and classrooms of Peru State College, Nebraska's first college. There is something about this little patch of land nestled in the bluffs along the banks of the Missouri River that claims a piece of you and leaves a lasting impression. The community members are always quick to lend a helping hand and it is our turn to lend one in return.
This isn't going to be a quick process and it will be something they will have to work through for months to come. There are many communities facing the same devastation and who are also in need of help, but if Peru is one that holds a special place in your heart and you would like to support its community directly, please consider donating. It is uncertain at this time whether the money will go to the city of Peru or to an account that is being set up specifically for Peru flood-related donations. Either way, all money donated will provide support to those who have been affected by the flooding in Peru as well as help with expenses in the coming months as the community begins to repair and rebuild.
