Permaculture and Music (Workshops & Concert)

Donation protected
In summer 2019, WIN Malawi hopes to introduce permaculture in select villages of Malawi. This initiative is in stride with our commitment to move villagers towards sustainable solutions. Permaculture equals permanent agriculture. Its foundational premise is to use a systematic approach to ecology that will allow for the planting of fruits and vegetables all year around. The current problem in Malawi stems from loss of traditional agricultural methods during the colonial period. In that time period, the concept of agriculture was geared towards export to Europe and growing one crop all year round replaced the ancient systems of rotating crops, which was much kinder to the land and more sustainable.

In this specific 2019 project, WIN Malawi plans to collaborate with Luwayo Biswick, who runs Permaculture Paradise near the Zambian border of Malawi in order to train 10 WIN farmers (with a preference for women to promote gender equity), in the basics of permaculture. The idea is to help them look at the environment in a different way and start the process of creating sustainable ecosystems. This is a long-term investment in WIN families as well as Malawi’s environment and global sustainability in this time of climate crisis. This knowledge will eventually allow WIN farmers, WIN students and families the opportunity to battle seasons of droughts and flood with a scientific approach to survival.

The workshop will be from August 1st 5th. August 5th is the birthday anniversary of Henry Masauko Chipembere. The workshops for WIN workers are a tribute to his memory that is in step with his concept of ‘human rights and dignity for all people.” There will be a celebration and a concert in Lilongwe on August 3rd in honor of Henry Masauko Chipembere featuring Masauko Chipembere Jr., Ernest Ikwanga, Sam Mkandawire, Chambota Chirwa and others. This will be covered by all forms of local media because these are some of the most respected young musicians in the country. Since many people in the villages are illiterate, it is necessary to involve music in the movement towards permaculture in Malawi. The musicians are committed to supporting the permaculture movement with songs that can spread the messages to the people, especially in rural areas. The concert is the beginning of a merger between popular musicians who are concerned about issues around food stability and WIN farmers in the villages of Mangochi. We hope to inspire the whole country to invest in permaculture as a sustainable solution to food shortages.
