People of Vidigal

My name is Marlon Preuss and I am a 24 year old fine art illustrator and muralist working out of Miami. I’ve always been fascinated by the favelas in Brazil and the ingenuity and creativity that goes into the creation and maintenance of these societies.

These beautiful, makeshift environments are the cornerstone of Brazilian culture. Although they are heavily overlooked by the government and often dismissed as places filled with only violence and hardship, Favelas provide a goldmine from which the rest of the world creates trends in art, movement, music, martial arts, and slang. Built from the need to survive, the hodgepodge of buildings scattered over a mountainscape look like a piece of art itself, proving against all odds that from nothing comes everything.

I have recently teamed up with a hotel called Mirante Do Arvrão located in the favela of Vidigal in Rio de Janeiro. In November, we will bring murals, art lessons, and community participation to the people and children of Vidigal who have the disposition, but little to no opportunity to recognize, develop, and spread their creative talents.

Our intention is to use art as an agent of empowerment and transformation for those living in this reality of social vulnerability. We believe that, by collaborating with children and local artists to paint murals inspired by the favelas in the favelas, a mirror can be turned towards the talent and energy that resides in places typically depreciated.

Public art classes will be held in Mirante Do Arvrão Hotel where local residents will have the opportunity and supplies to paint, color, create and converse. By handing the paint brush to the citizens and allowing them to collaborate with professional artists on outdoor murals will plant a seed of knowledge - one that shows that their art is not a contraband act, but actually just as powerful and valuable as the art in a museum.

We hope that the young participants will awaken an appreciation of themselves; generate an understanding that art can be done by anyone, anywhere; and possibilities for their futures.

The proceeds generated by this GoFundMe campaign will go towards purchasing paint, brushes, cleaning materials, a film crew, assistants, translators, and art class supplies.
