Pennies for the Pup
Have you ever wondered how the nose of a dog, which can detect one drop of a chemical in 16 Olympic size pools, can help conduct research and aid in conservation?
Meet Tilia. She can do all of this and more.
Tilia is the newest addition to the family at Mequon Nature Preserve. After her training, Tilia will become the first on-staff conservation dog in the state of Wisconsin.
Mequon Nature Preserve’s is 438-acres of woodlands, wetlands, prairies and open fields. Its mission is to be a guiding example of restoration by returning an urban/suburban area to pre-settlement conditions and establish an environmental education conservancy and natural habitat that inspires exploration and cultivates stewardship, encouraging visitors to get off the path. MNP Inc. endeavors to enlighten and educate. It links the landscape to people and gives children and adults an awareness and appreciation of the environment through hands-on instruction and free exploration. MNP Inc. educates through participatory demonstration projects in land restoration, conservation and environmental science. Programs offer critical thinking on how people live in and with the environment through the process of restoration.
Under the expert guidance of two local, professional dog trainers, Tilia will be participating in scent work and mascot training (along with a core group of our two-legged staff!) to help in our conservation efforts. Tilia will also be a conservation ambassador, joining MNP staff on field trips at the preserve and in the classroom. Check back to this page often as we will update you while Tilia moves through her training and development.
Any donation made to Pennies for the Pup will be put into a fund to provide for Tilia and continue the canine program designed to assist the restoring the land and educating our youth. Although she will not be ready to sniff her targets until next spring, as soon as we raise enough funds she will be ready to visit with the children participating in our field trips. Our goal is to raise the required funds by the end of 2016 to pay for her scent training in 2017. If we excede our goal, the funds will be used to care for her and continue her training into adulthood.
The entire staff at Mequon Nature Preserve thanks you for your support of Tilia. She will change lives. Feel free to follow her through her MNP Instagram (tilia_mnp) and, of course, please stop by for a visit!
