Pedal for Pongo

Orangutans (the genus Pongo) are amazing animals.  They're intensely intelligent and unique among primates in that they are rather reclusive whereas the majority of primates--and certainly the rest of the great apes--are incredibly social animals.

One of the great apes, they are some of our closest cousins. But their numbers are dwindling due to habitat destruction, and since 1980 25% of the Bornean rain forests have been destroyed, primarily due to illegal logging and palm oil plantations.
They are also hunted both for the pet and exotic meat trades. They are also hunted both for the pet and exotic meat trades. Orangutans have even been rescued from brothels  after having been forced into sex work  (CONTENT WARNING).

Forests are clear cut and burned at such a high rate that an area of equivalent size to 300 football fields is burned HOURLY. Orangutans are not only displaced, but fall victim to the fires .

At present, it is expected that Sumatran orangutans will be extinct in the wild in under a decade and both the Bornean and Sumatran species are listed as critically endangered.

Pedal Powered Anthropology  is working to educate people about the field of anthropology, and this current project is to raise awareness of the importance of species conservation.

Follow along  our planning, training, and bicycle tour from Rhode Island to Pennsylvania as we stop at zoos, museums, and universities along the way to learn about primates, biology, evolution, and conservation.

Please consider a donation in any amount to this ride. All proceeds are going to Orangutan Outreach and not to Pedal Powered Anthropology.
