The 5th grade teachers from PEC would love to take our students to spend an overnight at the Star of India in San Diego, CA.
This overnight outdoor education field trip allows students to re-live the turbulent year of 1774 experiencing the struggle of merchant mariners sailing the triangle trade route between New England and the Caribbean. Embarking on a voyage of the imagination, students will role-play with our maritime instructors, raising sails, loading cargo and protecting the vessel from pirates. Navigating their way through the political storms of the era, students will face frustrations that inspired American colonists to revolt. Ultimately, they will choose their own destiny and find out what role they will play in the war for America’s freedom.
This overnight outdoor education program will serve in preperation towards Cuyamaca Outdoor School aka 6th grade camp next year. Here, students will participate in hands-on lessons in an overnight camp setting. The activities aim to nourish an appreciation of nature, create a deeper understanding of science concepts, and provide an opportunity for students to explore their independence in a safe, educational and fun environment.
In order to participate in the 5th grade overnight program at the Star of India, we need your help! We are asking willing and able parents, family, and any others to donate what they can towards making this goal a reality.
The cost to attend this field trip is $73 per student. This year we have 105 5th graders. Your generous donation will help ensure each 5th grader at our school has an opportunity to attend this wonderful field trip!
Donations will be collected by the school's PTA and allocated as part of this year's 5th grade outdoor education fund. Any surplus funds will carry over with our current 5th graders and will be allocated as part of their general 6th grade camp fund.
**DISCLAIMER**
If by February 15th we have still not reached our goal, we will need to change our field trip from an overnight to a day trip, and any excess money we have collected will go towards their 6th grade camp fund for next year.
