In order to complete the film, we need to purchase crucial footage  from CTV which features Jim in the early 70's before he had to leave Newfoundland and go to the School for the Blind. (some of this footage is in the above promo video).  We also need to purchase performance footage from Much Music and the rest of the funds will go towards pressing the DVD's.

The film has been picked up for airplay by CBC and AMI - Access Media Televsion who broadcast to more than five million Canadians who are blind, partially sighted, deaf, hard of hearing, mobility or print restricted. ami.ca

The Story

Jim Fidler is not just a talented multi-instrumentalist, composer, songwriter and producer, he is a man with incredible vision and a message to share with those who would like to listen.

Just before loosing his sight at the age of 9, Jim appears on W5, a national television show. He directs his voice to those listening and says "No matter where you are, just because you're blind doesn't mean you can't do anything". This is the philosophy that would guide his own life and in this film we will illustrate how true these words are.

This  film will demonstrate how a creatively driven, talented person can overcome the isolation imposed by a disability, through sheer determination.

After going blind, Jim was sent to the Halifax School for the blind where he would spend the next 8 years of his life. He was naturally drawn to and excelled at music from a very early age. He started a bluegrass band with other kids from the School and also wrote and produced his first full length original recording using tape recorders.

He didn't realize the extent of his musical roots until he travelled to Pennsylvania and met his Father for the first time at the age of 23. There he also met his two musical brothers and his first cousin Christina Aguilera.

Jim's Brother Jeff talks about meeting Jim.

Throughout the film, Jim's music will be front and centre as part of the story. The soundtrack to this film will stand alone and be released on CD.

The story is also infused with culture and history. We will explore the diverse and rich culture and history of Newfoundland that influenced much of the music.
We'll also bring you to Ireland, France, the Carribbean and Africa where you'll hear the influences of those places in Jim's music.

Arthur O'Brien and Freddie Jorgansen from the Navigators.

Special musical guests in this film include: Alan Doyle, Darrell Power, Colleen Power, Dave Panting, The Secrets, Eamonn Dillon (Ireland), McGuiness Kitchen (Minnisota), Lindsay Ferguson (Switzerland), The Mudmen (Ontario), James McKie (Nova Scotia), Eddy Grant (Barbados), Jeff Fidler and Steve Fidler and more!

Ann Tenaglia was a teacher in an inner city school in Philadelphia. She taught her class many of Jim's songs including this one from the Album 'Musaik'. The song is called 'Salem' and the kids made up their own words for Martin Luther King Day.

More about Jim

Jim spends much of his time in his studio, creating and producing his unique blend of musical styles. He uses his production tools, much as an artist uses a paintbrush, to paint soundscapes. Jim's lastest creation is The Handler Project, a bi-national music collaboration between Jim and musician, composer/arranger, record producer Jörgen Hansson from Sweden. The pair are currently working on a new album entitled 'Signals from An Ancient Future' scheduled to be released in August of this year.
